Rip-off Warning: I cannot recommend anyone (especially tourists, expats, or embassy) visit the Aberdare Country Club.
First off, the place is decent. Tired but decent lodging. That being said, it is the activity offerings where they try and cheat you.
We had a group go there for New Year’s weekend. We planned on a game drive and sundowners as our main holiday celebration events. It was horrible. Unfortunately, we chose Aberdare for New Year’s over other places and were stuck there as it all went downhill.
We were originally told by our travel agent that a half day game drive was 150 and had the voucher with us. When we got to Aberdare they lied and said it was 180 and that the voucher was the travel agent’s information, not theirs. Since our travel agent supposedly gave us an out of date price list, we grudgingly accepted what turn out to be a bold lie. Additionally, they cheated us on the drive itself. We did and saw nothing over a shortened period of time (more on that to come below). After coming back from the holidays, we later learned from our travel agent that the voucher in question was actually supplied directly from the manager of Aberdare Country Club. It was their prices and voucher that they provided to our agent. They lied to us on the spot in order to charge us more. We believed them since they claimed it was not their voucher. At the time we did not think to validate if they were lying.
While there, they told us that game drives started at 9:30 AM even though we wanted to go earlier. Later they lied to our agent and claimed that it started at 8:30 AM but we were an hour late. We were not. In fact, our party was ready at 9:00 AM and was sitting around their reception waiting for the 9:30 start. Lying after the fact that we were late by an hour is funny since their own materials said that safaris started at 7:00 AM. So their lie wasn’t even accurate. Lying that the start was at 8:30 and we were an hour late still differs from when we were actually supposed to start. Copied and pasted directly out of THEIR information:
“Game drive Experience in Aberdares National park Or in Solio Game Reserve
Safari time from 07:00am to 05:00pm Ksh. 15,000 per vehicle, half day game drive in 4x4 land cruiser Ksh. 27,000 per vehicle, full day game drive in 4x4 land cruiser”
Not only did they keep lying to us, but we didn’t even do the entire half day trip! We were only on safari for an hour. An hour drive to the park, 30 minutes at the gate waiting to finish their entrance process, another hour to drive back. We were back by 1pm at the country club. Most safaris are 7 to 5 (or similar) with half day safaris coming back at 1PM. We left 2.5 hours late but still came back at 1PM!!!! Ripoff!!! We paid them a dirty price for our drive, paid the park entrance fees (including $240 for 3 non-residents) and only saw an hour in the park. The driver did not know where anything was and did not ask. We learned from other people that they normally stop and pick up one of the park residents/guides to take them to see everything. We paid a lot of money for a trip on the highway.
We had other bad issues once there but I do not have enough space to include.
Upon coming back from that fiasco, we talked to our travel agent. She was furious. She called the manager and asked him directly about the lies we were told. After weak, made up excuses about us, he agreed it was wrong and said he would look into a resolution. They did nothing. Our agent kept on them for months. Throughout, she received word from him that we would get a refund for the drive (a bare minimum for what they did to us in my mind). They kept promising a refund “next week”. Always “next week”. Eventually they said before month’s end. Never happened. Our agent even met with them during conferences and such and was told the owner was getting involved to get us our refund.
End result: Over three months later, they claimed it was our fault for going and we were not getting anything from them. Issue closed.

Spacious rooms with most required furniture. Unfortunately not super clean, but this is also due to the dusty roads around. The dinner and breakfast come in form of a buffet with huge choice and good quality. Liked it a lot. There is a pool and a cleaning laundry service as well. Lots of tours can be booked around. For us it was the start and end point if a Mt Kenya expedition.

Nice place, quiet (well except the hyraxes and peacocks). A place to relax and have fun . The kids will love it. Just don't allow them to carry their gadgets. Food was awesome and staff joyful and helpful.

A wonderful piece of paradise, with so many animals without even having to leave the hotel. You definitely can't miss out on the horseback safari. I've been raised in kenya going on countless safaris and I've never seen wild giraffe that close, almost at arms reach.

Loved the crisp, fresh air and wildlife. The food was delicious all week and staff friendly. But watch out, it gets chilly - even in the hot season.

Great views, the scenery is beautiful and you can see plenty of animals on the grounds. Food was excellent. They adapted the menu to include gluten-free options for a celiac traveller, and the food was delicious.
