stunning mountainside views and outstanding collection displayed in I.M. Pei building. The Peach Valley restaurant has several vegan or veg friendly options, featuring only organic and biodynamic products, at very reasonable prices. Exhibitions vary, so check website before making the trip.

Directions: take JR Biwako line from Kyoto station to Ishiyama , then bus 150. Or, take Tozai subway from Kyoto to Yamashina, transfer to JR Biwako line for Ishiyama, then Bus 150. Bus is cash only , 820JPY.

It may be far from Kyoto and hard to get you here, however I highly recommend you experience I.M.Pei’s last architectural masterpiece!

A tranquil place. Very nice vegetarian food made with local produce. The museum is beautifully built. Well worth the long drive.

Created by IM Pei, the Miho Museum is located in the middle of the beautiful Shigaraki Mountains just outside Kyoto. It is quite literally intended to be a paradise on Earth, and it worked for me; it is my favorite museum in the world from its architecture to the master pieces presented inside.

The museum's collection features over 2,000 works of art, with the North wing housing temporary exhibitions devoted to elements of the Japanese aesthetic and the South wing presenting pieces of the Sassanian, Persian, Egyptian, Roman and Chinese Empires. One of the most notable items in its possession is a Second Century AD standing Buddha from Pakistan, which is one of the largest surviving of its kind.

Stunning museum designed by I. M. Pei located deep in a hill southeast of Kyoto in Shiga Prefecture. Walking through the tunnel towards the museum is dramatic with a panoramic view of the surrounding valleys. During the spring, the cherry blossoms on the path will make the walk even more scenic. The view from the geometric glass and steel structure of the main museum is so serene. There is Egyptian, Roman and Asian exhibits as well as the main and special exhibits changing seasonally.

The access takes about an hour from Kyoto Station but make sure to check the bus hours as there is only one every hour there and back from Ishiyama Station.

What a great experience, I am glad I made the trip out to visit this place. The architecture, the surroudings, the exhibits. Only pity is that I didn't have time to enjoy the food at the cafe as it was very crowded and I had to dash off to catch a train.
