The biggest, quietest, slightly-spookiest place in Kyoto. Empty during the week with lots of benches, and mysterious at night in the rain!

正面に見える御所の建礼門までは距離があり砂利道なので歩きやすい靴がおすすめです

一般的には｢京都御所｣と呼ばれるが、正確な｢京都御所｣は、この｢京都御苑｣内にある旧大内裏を指す。 ｢京都御所｣は、宮内庁管轄で参観には許可が必要だが、｢京都御苑｣は環境庁の管轄で一種の国立公園扱い。 それでも、旧内裏という事もあり、それなりの平安時代の雰囲気を残しつつ、豊かな自然が楽しめる。敷地内には旧宮家の邸宅跡などもあり、日が合えば自由に参観できる。

一面の砂利敷きの中に一筋二筋のラインができる。これは自転車のわだち。京都御所迂回するのは遠回りなので、皆中を通って行き来する。しかし砂利の中自転車こぐのは大変なので自然、前の人が通った道をなぞることになる。こうして京都御所にいつもわだちが刻まれる。

御所東北角にある「猿が辻」鬼門にあたるのですが、ここに猿（彫り物）が祀られています。かつて日吉山王神社の使いだったお猿さんが夜悪戯をするので、閉じ込められちゃったんですって。お猿さんの顔がいたずらっ子みたいでどことなくかわいいですよ。

御苑内は砂利道のため、キャリーケースで移動するのは至難のわざ！旅行者はご注意を。自転車が通る轍（わだち）を活用するのが攻略のポイントです。

御苑内には実は猛禽類が生息しています。人間を攻撃したりはしませんが、稀に鳩など獲物を狙っているところを目撃されます。
