Big zoo! The animals care takers seem passionate and attentive. It is a small fee to enter making this a great place to visit often! They also have a large variety of animals!!

I cried when I saw the lonely lion looking starved and unhealthy! The whole place looks as if the keepers have no idea how to care for the animals. Especially the tigers, he lol , the hippo and the exotic birds.

Absolutely atrocious. Shut this place DOWN!!!!!

Terrible Place, Place is VERY small the animals are suffering, If you are trying to cry then come here. Place has a TON of fake reviews please dont go to this zoo, very cruel to animals.

Great zoo, good for kids. Carnival rides in the middle. Some enclosures seem quite small.

Kyoto zoo is fairly small, but has a good assortment of animals and would be best for kids. My main issue with the zoo is it's care and enclosures. Unlike say, Ueno Zoo, the enclosures are not modern at all and seem somewhat poorly maintained. A number of the animals also seemed to be in questionable health as well.. not necessarily sick but underweight and stressed. Many of the enclosure lack adequate cover for the animals and some of the things that were being fed seemed questionable to me as well. I am not an animal husbandry expert, this is just my opinion based upon experience working with zoos, pet shops, etc. That being said, it is not a bad zoo and the 600yen cover charge is quite reasinable. Definitely worth a look if you enjoy animals.

Small. Good for kids. But mature person will find it sad for various reasons. Lions and tigers are so skinny, I don't know why! Unexpected in Japan.

I am not a big fan of zoos in general; I always feel the animals deserve more space and a more natural environment. The Kyoto City Zoo is no exception. Some of the exhibits, such as the gorillas and the chimpanzees, are quite good. The animals are in a fairly comfortable environment and yet easy to see. Other exhibits, such as the big cats and the Japanese macaques were just depressing. Overall, it is a clean and well-managed facility, but that is just par for the course in Japan.
