  かつて京都守護職の本陣が置かれた寺院として、また新撰組発祥の地として有名であるが、山頂付近にある会津藩士の眠る会津墓地は必見である。

  黒谷浄土宗の総本山であり通称は黒谷さん、山号は紫雲山。開創は承安5年 (1175年)、開山は法然。叡山西塔の黒谷より念仏説法のため草庵を結んだのを始めとする。知恩院と並ぶ浄土宗四箇本山の一つで、室町期には公武の尊崇を受けるが、応仁の乱後衰退。京都守護職に任ぜられた会津藩主・松平容保が本陣を置いた地で、新撰組発祥の地とされる。文殊塔と木造千手観音立像、山越阿弥陀図・地獄極楽図屏風は重要文化財。
