  I very unique excavation site with a captivating samurai past. The gates to the ruins are particularly beautiful. There are many pretty streams and very large koi you can feed for 100 yen. The samurai village really got my imagination flowing. The town itself is beautiful. A Fukui must see.

  保存に携わる地元の方々の力で、綺麗に手入れされ、発掘から関わっている婦人の見事なガイドもあり、旅の途中で一寸寄るには勿体無い。近くに宿をとり何度も来て昔を忍びたい、数少ない遺跡。このたたずまいが何時までも変わらないと良いな❗。

  I can't understand why this place isn't mobbed with people . Thankfully it's not. Really beautiful, natural location, and no kiosks or tourist schlock. Restorations really well done. And a place of incredible historical significance- once home to a whole city rivaling Kyoto in size until Nobunaga burned it to the ground!

  This was a very nice place to go back in time on. The place was almost empty when we were there, my companions and three other elderly couples. We rented two samurai armors for half an hour(500 yen, only coins) which was the highlight of the trip. The elderly couples came by while we were posing and asked if they could take photographs with us, which was fun. Other than that, this place has a reconstructed town street, houses and more, which costed around 250yen to get inside to. After that we took a stroll in the beautiful valley over to another set of ruins, where we fed some fish and turtles, saw a crow snake going all out after a frog, and more.
  
  We travelled from Kyoto to Fukui, and took a taxi from there, three train tickets costing 26000 yen both ways, and another 5600 yen for the taxi. When we were about to leave three buses with tourists came by. After chatting a while with one of the tour guides he mentioned they were from Osaka, where one could order a trip by bus to Ichijodani, which likely would have been much cheaper. The only drawback I have with this place is its location, although knowing one could take a bus from Osaka would have made it easier.

  The mannequins were really well done and helped visualize their lifestyle at the time. The staff was super friendly. We walked 15-20 minutes from Ichijodani station and took the bus back to Fukui (they did accept our JR rail passes).
