Great place to wear yukata and stroll around. Ryokan serves delicious and beautiful food
The location is on near the main road between the several onsen and the JR station. The room is good and the food is great. The staff was very nice even though I can only speak minimal Japanese.
Higashiyamaso is an excellent value for the location. We chose the "most popular" dinner option of Taijima Beef and crab, and it was fantastic. We cooked our steak and udon at our table, after a bit of confusion due to the language barrier. The side dishes were traditional and interesting, but challenging for those unused to traditional Japanese food. The hotel onsen consisted of a gender separated open bath, which was small, and a reservation-only private bath for mixed bathing. The in-house bath is open 24 a day, but during the day you should instead visit one or more of the town's famous public onsen, one of which is right next door, and all of which are within comfortable walking distance. Do walk around town in the hotel provided yukata and haori, but pass on the geta sandals aside from a quick jaunt to see how hard they are to walk in. Hotel staff during our visit didn't speak or understand much English, but provided great friendly service. Take a stroll around the town and maybe try out an onsen after dinner to provide them with an opportunity to clean up after the meal and lay out your futon bedding. The futons here are some of the most comfortable I've slept in, with fantastic comforters. The rooms are traditional style with tatami mats floors, which you should walk on with only socks or bare feet, and our 4 person room was larger than expected, with three 'rooms' connected by paper sliding doors, and widows with great views. If you want to visit an onsen ryokan on a budget, I highly recommend Higashiyamaso.
