Couldn't wait to write a review due to this bad experience. This place felt wrong since the first second we entered this restaurant. Unfortunately we did not turn around as the seating section looked a bit nicer at first glance and we had been walking many hours and were really hungry. First impression was raunchy and run down (including staff; not just greasy hair but somehow blowzy). We waited for 15 Minutes after the order just to get a lukewarm vegetable and salty tomato soup. The mixed salad wasn't prepared fresh, very unusual for Italy and again too salty, vinegar hardly noticeable. The pasta (spaghetti oily) was below average too. There were no other Italians except me at this place which is typical for a tourist trap. Don't come here, there are many other places you can spend less money for more. This restaurant is disgusting!

Ah, Roma! I'm seriously missing you right now. Taverna Barberini is one of the places my mind keeps reimagining as I think back on my trip. It's the kind of restaurant that truly encapsulates the allurement of Rome, at least for me. The carefree hustle of the city around you, the warm invitation to come downstairs and immerse yourself in an intimate setting, classic Roman dishes made bright with simple ingredients and herbs. All lovely.

Although we were tempted to wander downstairs into the warm light as if visiting an old friend, we opted to sit outside to enjoy the crisp autumn weather and the busy street-side sights. There are only a few tables outside and quarters are super close on the sidewalk, but that's part of the experience. I'm comfortable in a tight spot if the environment around me is dynamic - including exceptional cuisine, wine, and beloved company!

My friend and I found Taverna Barberini on Yelp by searching "gluten free" and "vegetarian." You'd think we'd have trouble finding legit food in Italy with our dietary needs/choices, but we had no bumps at all. So much great food and people who took our eating issues seriously. Taverna Barberini had an incredible array of choices! Almost everything could be made "senza glutina," hallelujah. I wish I could remember the exact name of my dish, I apologize, but I've included pictures of my plate! It was some kind of Roman pasta dish made with an incredible tomato sauce (I think with pieces of pork/lardons), super thick gluten free spaghetti noodles, and red pepper, all sprinkled with grated parmesan. It was outstanding. The flavor of the sauce was so rich, like it'd been simmering for days. The spice was perfection and the noodles cooked a splendid al dente. Really an amazing dish.

As in most of the places I ate in Rome and Florence, the service wasn't quite as "attentive" as I'm used to, and I loooove it. No one is rushing you in and then out of their restaurant. It's a much more relaxed vibe, you know? Eat and enjoy. Take the time to soak in your environment, your company, your food and drink. I really don't understand people who rush through meals, but for me, eating is always the main event!

Poor Bruschetta, tasteless. Ragu also badly seasoned and bland. Fruit flies were a problem and one overworked waiter and a sweaty manager who wandered around. My worst experience of food in italy. The wine was fine!

My fiance and I came here after finding it as a listing for restaurants for gluten free food in Rome. We were a little bit wary due to the conflicting nature of the reviews, but decided to give it a try anyways and were rewarded.

As others have mentioned it is a bit off the normal tourist path but not far, with an entrance that dips straight downstairs. Others described it as dark, but I found the lighting to be very adequate, rustic mood lighting. Like most of our food outings on this trip to Rome (winter and very cold out), the restaurant was empty. The waiter told us that anything could be made gluten free, which is very nice for my fiance who has celiac's.

I had a pasta dish with fresh made hollow spaghetti and a simple red sauce made with reduced tomatoes, some meat, onions, and pepper. It was quintessentially Italian, simple dish made with good ingredients which tasted great. Our food came out hot served in a pan, I'm not sure if this is normal but it was interesting and really helped to show the freshness of the food. After dinner we had a gluten free tiramisu which was quite excellent.

I hope more people will make the journey despite the couple of off putting reviews, because it really rewarded us with one of our most enjoyable evenings in Rome.

I never knew how bad a restaurant could be until we entered this place. The friendly welcome made sense as soon as we sat down and overheard the waiter explain that although service has been added his tip is not included in the bill. Also we were served bread that was inedible (but on the bill) and pasta that included little of the ingredients mentioned on the menu. Bill turned out way higher than expected, I mentioned my bad experience but little response. This is the definition of a tourist trap for me, they know you won't come back so serve you food of very poor quality. Luckily there are reviews to warn fellow travelers and make these people know they need to step up their game.
