Amazing stop!! Insanely blue water and the coolest looking rocks you’ll ever see. Definitely worth the easy gravel road detour from the Golden Circle.

Amazing experience, though dangerous to get there. Absolutely worth to visit as road to it is beautiful, going by river. Just chose not too windy, not rainy day. Otherwise you won't be able to get down to the beautiful view. Path is steep, also there are ropes you can / have to hold.

A natural sculpture. A path from the small parking, goes down. At the feet of the path, a spectacular vision of the canyon appear in front of you.

Beautiful but risky place what to see. Very close to canyon edge is very high and you can fall down. be very careful when taking pictures. I hope there will be never any fall. I don't know if I took right place photos but at Summer time maybe it is possible to walk down to the river and make pictures from very close at the river.

This place is pretty tough to reach or find, we came out on the wrong side of the river like some other reviews here. Had to climb over a fence to reach the small cliff and got to see the canyon from the 'wrong' side.

This hike would have been awesome but when we arrived at the canyon the water was a ragging muddy gray river. The basalt columns were cool but disappointing without the pretty blue water. I read in late summer/ beginning fall the river gets more full and turns from beautiful blue to gray.

I think it's possible to get closer (if you have a good car), but we just saw it from the distance (from a nearby farm).

Words cannot describe the view of the canyon. It is one of the most underrated hidden gem in Iceland. The round trip is approximately 8km, and one might need to forge one's own path, but the hike there is definitely worthwhile. To get there from Egilsstaðir, drive along the gravel road for about 14km, and you will see a sign on the left of a farm called Klaustursel. Follow the path and you will see a parking area with a white bridge further up the road (it is too narrow for cars, so I would suggest parking it at the area provided). The trailhead is on the right of the bridge. Follow that path, and after about 2km, you will see a beautiful basalt waterfall called Stuðlafoss. Keep walking (you might have to climb over a few gates) until you reach the end. Follow the path downwards (with the river to your left) until you reach the bridge, and turn right to follow a really small path. From here, it gets a little vague, and you need to freestyle your way down into the canyon. From there, you can slowly make your way back. !!Warning: there are a lot of flies!!
