Rio Tinto Iceland Ltd. is owned by the global leader in aluminium, Rio Tinto and is one of the biggest industrial companies in Iceland. The company plays a big role in Iceland's economy and supplies about 23% of all the goods exported from Iceland.

The smelter's annual capacity is about 208.000 tons and it employs 380 people year-round.

They say you fall in love with your first smelter and they're probably not wrong. As my coach passed by on the way to the airport I couldn't stop staring out of the window as this beautiful building seemed to continue on forever as we passed by, the darkness of the Icelandic winter highlighting this stark, brutalist structure as a powerful reminder of aluminium and its importance to all our lives.

A city girl in a storm, looking for shelter
found refuge at this Rio Tinto aluminium smelter
From the heavy rain she tried to hide
But it was the hydrogen fluoride
that in the end finally felled her.

Took a private golf caddy tour with Goldmember who's got a gold smelter here. Finished with a schmoke and a pancake, worth every penny.

They say whoever smelt it, dealt it. Well this place delivers on that promise. Stop in for a tour and a free sheet of aluminium foil for the roadlimit 3 though.

In this barren landscape, rising from the ashes this big, beautiful candy cane striped smelter. Breathtaking.

I took my fiancé to Iceland because it's such a beautiful place to propose. Anyway was driving in from the airport and saw this smelter and I knew right then and there that this was the moment I had been waiting for. I pulled over and got down on one knee and asked her to marry me. Her heart smelted and she said yes. Such a beautiful place and memory for us. Will be having my wedding pictures taken here for sure.

Definitely the bestest and most longest smelter I have ever seen. Guessed it was a factory for constructing robotic snakes, but I was wrong.
