Late November. Wonderful weather but very cold. Driving north from Reykjavik we decided to take the old road around Hvalfjordur which was the only road before they built the tunnel in the 1990s. We were the only car on the road and it felt as if we had the whole place to ourselves. A really beautiful drive, made even more interesting by the discovery that the installation at the head of the fjord was a British/American base during WW2 after British invaded Iceland in 1941. That’s not something we learn about in school!

Not too much to do and no gift shop, thank heavens, but they might want to change this into a museum when whaling season is off.

Une excursion dans le fjord des baleines (Hvalfjörður), à environ 30 minutes au nord de Reykjavik. Un très long fjord bordé par de magnifiques flancs de montagnes qui s'élèvent jusquà 1000m.
