Eldfell

  The walk to the top of Edfell is the one every visitor to Heimaey wants to do. It's that famous volcano that spectacularly erupted out of nowhere in 1973. The track is easily accessible, and the views are absolutely stunning in all directions. From the top you can gawk onto the impressive lava flow that was furiously roiling & boiling only a few decades ago, and single-handedly enlarged the island by several square kilometers. I wrote a description of this walk on my blog Wilderness Coffee & Natural High, including lots of pictures. You can find it if you search for 'The walking track to Eldfell - The Fiery Mountain' (wildernesscoffee-naturalhigh). There are various paths across the lava field, with memorial signposts with the names of the streets that are now buried 30 to 60 meters below the lava. If you walk along to the very end of the colourful top ridge, you can find some steamholes still emanating heat from below. In wintertime, when Eldfell has been snowed upon, you can see exactly where it's still warm on the top ;-)

  Nice walk to the top of this young volcano. It's still hot at the top if you put your hand a few centimeters in gravel

  Amazing views. Bring kids to warm their hands in holes on top do volcano. They will love it. Not terrible hike. It was the safest hike we did during our visit of Westman Islands.
