Nothing to appreciate during winter as all are covered by snow. Although it’s always free entry, maybe better idea for tourists to spend time in somewhere else during this period. Must be more interesting in summer though.

On our way from the North Cape while travelling above the Arctic Circle we had to visit this, the world's northern-most botanical garden. It's by no means alrge, only 3.7 hectares (9 acres), but is beautifully laid out and maintained, and full of many beautiful Icelandic and Arctic flora. The fountains and greenhouses in the gardens are also definitely worth a visit. The Akureyri Botanical Gardens (Lystigardurinn) function both as a public park, initially created by local housewives and first opened in the Spring of 1912, and as a botanical garden in 1957. The gardens are also used for scientific research into the survival of plants and function as a gene bank for hardy plants suitable to the weather conditions on the Arctic edge. Good coffee is served in the modern, café/bistro located in the center of the garden and sitting outside on the patio area on a nice day is a great way to enjoy the garden surroundings. The cafe also has gluten-free items on its menu. The drive to the gardens is also enjoyable passing typical Icelandic homes in the older part of the town. It's easy to see why this garden is Akureyri's pride and joy.

The garden is relaxing, free and has a fascinating collection of Icelandic and Arctic Flora. Though the specimens are mostly labeled with genus and species, there is little to no additional information.

Quiet park with many different flowers and plants. Very well maintained and not crowdy at all (end of afternoon visit), perfect for a quiet walk. Toilets available but not for free.

Lovely botanical garden to visit (in the season).
Great place to walk around in with lots of different flowers to admire.
We were there in the evening and there were some other people there, but it isn't crowded at all.

I live nearby and truly love it. You should know that official opening hours are from 1. June until 30. September. The garden is open in the winter but you will not see much except snow. The Café is also closed during winter.

Open formally from 1st of June to 30th of September. It's a peaceful and wonderful place to visit. The cafe in here is open all year round and is great.

We visited in March and there a was absolutely nothing growing and cafe was not open. They have a lot of the plots labeled where the plants will grow but if you're going here before April do not expect to see much except brown earth or a blanket of snow. I'm sure it would be stunning once the growth has started.

Gorgeous, peaceful garden in Akureyri - don't miss it! Nice cafe in the garden as well. So many types of flowers. The poppies were beautiful when I was there in July.
