Definitely recommend that you take the journey out. The drive to the bird sanctuary was awesome with incredible views!

The bird sanctuary itself was lovely. We saw a lot of puffins, however, you need to be patient as they only come out every so often and then retreat back in their nest under the grass.

The best place to watch the Icelandic puffins, just climb up the promontory and have some patience.
There is also an equipped lodge for bird watching.

You come so close to the puffins that it almost feels like a zoo. But it is one of the easiest places to watch puffins. You do not have to go into the payed bird hide, just stand on the platform or on the stairs and be patient. We went there in the evening and the birds were close enough that I had to zoom out to fit then in the picture! I will add some better pictures the one below is taken with my phone.

Puffins! Great place to see them, you can get fairly close to them at the viewing platform, and can also see a lot more of them if you bring some binoculars.
Consider the time of day before you go, they aren't always at their burrows (which is when they are closest to the viewing platform). We went at around 6pm and there was quite a few flying back to their burrows, got some nice pictures.

Perfect Place to watch Puffins. For a small fee you can even get inside a house and sit in the warmth (and a little closer to the Puffins) while watching them. But even without paying for the shelter we got pretty close up and personal with the animals (touching of course prohibited). It was a very nice and calm place to relax and explore the world of Puffins.

Perfect place for puffin watching during summer season. Puffins can be as close as 2~3 meters away. Easy parking. Just walk up stairs and puffins are everywhere. My shots are taken 2016/06/15 with 70-200IS+5D3. Longer zoom lens will be handy if you have one. Make sure you come at the right season.

Pretty nice view, and best spot in Iceland for puffin photos

Still, I don't think the detour is with it. Unless you got that brand new camera zoom and are willing to stay still for hours on end, waiting for the perfect puffin shot, this is a huge waste of time. The puffins are visible only for seconds after they come out of their holes and before they fly away. And they're very far. They won't wait for your shot.

So I'd skip the visit unless you really have like a day off, in which case Borgarfjardarhofn is a nice place to visit, for the views alone.
