The village is dreary and there's no fine dining here. In fact it's lousy enough. I'd try Claremorris down the road which has better facilities. but the shrine is very special. Lots of resources if you look around to find peace, blessing and courage to continue the journey of life. Some of the ceremonies are just wonderful.

Knock Shrine can seem out of place, set in the tranquil countryside of Ireland's West Country. However after over one hundred years of praise and worship the Catholic Faithful keep returning to the place of an Apparition by Mary, The Mother of God. Whilst much smaller than its counterparts such as Lourdes and Guadalupe this Shrine holds a peaceful presence for over one million visitors a year. Beautiful Masses, with fine music and themed retreats are held throughout the year for visitors from all countries of the Globe. If in Ireland it is well worth a visit. There are ample guest houses and hotels in the area and many more places to explore in County Mayo.

Such a beautiful place to visit, it feels like all your troubles are forgotten when you are there. Was at the mass for the sick in the basilica, it was a lovely mass with 2 fabulous singers, really enhanced the mass. Definitely a must for visiting.

Knock Shrine may be seen as the poor relation to Lourdes, but in recent years it has undergone a miraculous multi million euro facelift.
God knows where the money has come from (tongue in cheek..!)
The newly refurbished Basilica is a beautiful must see for the religious and non religious art lovers alike.
Near it's chancel an expansive wall boasts an imposing mosaic, made up of 1.5 million individual pieces. According to the Shrine's own website, it is one of the largest mosaics in Europe.
The creation depicts a scene of the Blessed Virgin Mary appearing to the poor Irish vagrants, giving them hope as they endured British occupation and the horrors of the 'Potato Famine'.
The Catholic Church authenticated the Marian apparition and the faithful have flocked to this site ever since.
There are a few chapels on the grounds of Knock Shrine. The main attraction is the 'Apparition Chapel'. It's a holy glass house encasing the gable wall of the original Church, where Our Lady paid a visit.
The original Church still stands and is fully operational for worship. For those into mysticism, the reveared gable wall conceals to this day the Holy tabernacle, a place where, Catholics are taught, Jesus lives.
For mere mortal Catholics who happen to find themselves on the naughty list, the 'Chapel of Reconciliation' offers daily forgiveness. Very handy in an era
where Catholic daily 'Confessions' are almost non existent.
The Holy site also hosts amenities like: the book shop, information centre, ample parking, rest rooms, indoor and outdoor prayer areas, a museum, café, and a hotel.
There are plenty of shops selling religious Christian items and cafés beside the Shrine. There is also a caravan park and a near by play ground for the kids.
Be aware there is an an advertised dress code. This is in response to the one time scantily clad females who were seen as a distraction to pious worship!

James 4:6, 10 tells us, "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up". Our worship to God is a very humble and reverent action.
