Beautiful monument, even though not that famous. Pay attention, the car park on the other side of the road is not free of charge.

Poignant reminder of the death, starvation, devastation and emigration of the mid 1840s due to the Great Famine in Ireland caused by failure of the blighted potato crop on which the population was almost totally dependent.
The the country was exporting good at the same time.
The Croagh Patrick Visitor Centre is located near the National Famine Monument in Murrisk. This magnificent piece of sculpture by John Behan was unveiled by President Mary Robinson in 1997. It depicts a Coffin Ship with skeleton bodies and commemorates the anniversary of the Famine. There is an extensive famine landscape around Croagh Patrick.

Monument didn't really tell you too much apart from it's in aid of the famine. You only need 5 minutes but don't park in the car park over the road as waste of money for 5 minute view. Park down by the abbey which is down the side road, free parking and actually more interesting to see the abbey.
