  I couldn't have been happier with my experience, in fact it surpassed my expectations. I dreamed of seeing Leap Castle since i was a child. Owner went above and beyond

  First learned of the 'most haunted castle in Ireland' from the show "Most Haunted" so made sure to stop in while touring County Offaly. Glad we did. The signage is not good and we had to turn around after driving about 3 miles past it, but once we pulled into the narrow gate, we were entranced. There is a large keep surrounded by semi-ruined stone walls - quite eery. After knocking on the door, a tour guide opened it for us and we observed that Shawn, the owner, was in the middle of recounting the castle's history to a small tour group and kindly allowed us to join in. There isn't any official 'open hours', but it seems to me that when visiting, either call ahead or try knocking on the door when you get there and ask for a visit. Expect to pay around 6 Euros each to Shawn to visit. The interior of the castle is partially restored and very cozy. We learned the history of the castle, the various families that occupied it, and some tellings of the spirits that are alleged to roam it. The darkest part was learning of the 'pit of death' where in the past, people were killed by being dropped head-first into a dark pit fitted with spikes at the bottom. According to Shawn, over 14 cart-loads of human bones were removed from the castle. I highly recommend a visit for this unique experience.
