Lived in Hong Kong all my life but only just discovered this recently as my company’s new office is just around the corner. I’ve got to admit it’s a strange place but I love it.
Mix of western and Chinese but not like modern fusion, I’m talking ‘Soy Sauce Western’ so it has some strange dishes like tomato broth with macaroni, spam and fried eggs which is oddly satisfying – like drunk college food! Great for just grabbing some toast drizzled with butter, lemon and honey on my way to the office.
The walk up the hill to it makes me feel less guilty too!
Yummy and healthy taste tomato soup. I like their home made soup taste with no MSG. Although I ordered with instant noodles but it’s cooked well and the price is cheap. We needed to line up even on a hot and sunny day, then you know how yummy it is. Will definitely go again. I think the mostly ordered dishes there were the beef tomato soup and the toast.
Long queue even during weekeday, but worth to have a try. Their tomato soup was one of my favourite as it taste sweet and sour.
Are the staff here rude/brusque? Yes. Is the food nice? Well, yeah. Can you “cook this at home”? Of course you can. In fact, part of the appeal of the noodles is that it tasted like (good) home cooked food.
Came to this popular dai pai dong with a colleague during lunch hour and boy was it busy. People are required to find seating for themselves, so get ready to wait for a while. This place is popular for serving cheap local eats such as instant noodles, pork chop buns, sandwiches etc. What you'll see people ordering however, are the condensed tomato broth based dishes which they are well known for. I don't expect this place to be a first choice for tomato haters (you know who you are). We ordered tomato macaroni & beef ($25) along with their famous crispy buns of which there are two choices: condensed milk & butter ($11) , and butter & honey with lemon ($11), we opted for both but they forgot our condensed milk bun (it was fine as we were full by then). Now I believe this place is very popular simply because there are not many open-air Dai pai dongs left in Hong Kong, especially in Central where the prices of food are hiked up almost everywhere due to the ludicrous rental prices here, as well as the fact that they've put a unique spin on local simple asian comfort food by the use of tinned tomatoes . The dishes come at a very fast pace (we got our dishes within 10 minutes) due to popular demand and people waiting to eat. The macaroni was in a thick tomato broth with bits of chunky tomato , there are huge tins of crushed tomatoes stockpiled next to the kitchen. It's a good dish for winter as thick broths can warm you up real nice, the broth itself not too sweet, not too sour, and had the perfect amount of seasoning and beef imparted flavour. The beef itself was tender, not chewy, making the dish gentle on the palate. Mind you don't expect the quality of the ingredients to be fantastic. They don't make their own macaroni or peel their tomatoes, this is comfort food at its best, cheap, fast, no fuss, no-frills yet very tasty.
The crispy buns arrived, and these delicious golden crispy buns were light and fluffy on the inside, flakey crust once pulled apart which I love in crispy bread (mmm this is how it should be done) , a thin layer of spread lemon butter gave it a nice acidic zing, not intense at all that you'd have to wash it off.
Now I'm not a tomato guy, but this place is a place to go if you're looking for the true local Hong Kong experience, there are many other cha chaan tengs you can find that serves food like this except for the tomato twist, so if you don't mind waiting.
Local style Hong Kong food in a Tai Pai Dong setting . Famous for milk tea and tomato soup based noodles or macaroni ( with different types of toppings depends on your own choice) . Not a comfortable place to sit but you can definitely taste some delicious food and experience local dinning style, often appeared on foreign visitors must-eat list . Sometimes line ups might be long but definitely worth a wait . Avoid lunch times for huge crowds .
Hong Kong style beef, sausage and luncheon meat noodle with salty lemon drink, it's delicious!
Good local food. It's simple but delicious. One of the few remaining place to have a feel of old Hong Kong when street food was in abundance. Go for the tomato base soup noodles. Coming here again.
Food: 2/5; Environment: 2/5; Service: 3/5; Price: 3/5;
A local roadside cafe for tourist or who doesn't bother to cook instant noodle by himself. Ordered a tomato beef with fried eggs noodle. Noodle is just normal instant noodle, half cooked. tomato soup is just tomato with hot water. The beef only taste like normal meet. But still everything is eatable, so give a overall rating 2/5.
Fast and no frill service. Serving typical hk food. All outdoor and full of ppl during bfast time. Need to share table with others as well.
Very local Dai Pai Dong, very popular by both locals and tourists, tomato soup base is their king and don't forget to try the Honey Lemon toast.
I got tomato and egg and a crispy bun with condensed milk. The combination is perfect for breakfast! Totally street food, so don't expect anything decent. You also have to sit together with strangers which is pretty common here.
Local food but good , friendly service outdoor space . Quite famous for Tourists
Hong Kong styled street fast good shop. Delicious noodles in tomato soup and honey lemon toast. very popular for tourists and locals. All outdoor seating and therefore not a good choice in hot season or rainy days
Love this place's toast it's crunchy and very tasty. Best that I have before.
Good place for an interesting meal. I got noodles that felt like a fusion of western and eastern (tomatoes in broth). It was not bad, but it felt weird eating it because it was a new experience for me. It still tasted fine.
Long wait for nice and reasonably priced tomato soup pasta.
My favourite snack in the district!
Lemon honey crispy bun + tomato based instant noodle(usually together with eggs and beef )+ Iced lemon tea are my usual choice.
come in the late afternoon if you want to skip the waiting time
I personally do not like the instant noodle flavor as much. Maybe I prefer really bad food. The kaya toast was phenomenal though. It is a very nice quick bite joint.
Pretty unique and amazing tomato based soup. Get in early to avoid long queues. The waitresses are super confused/confusing, but it's funny.
Totally in love with their lemon honey toast (柠蜜脆脆) and their salted lemon with sprite (鹹柠7).
Two words: COMFORT FOOD. Highly recommended if you like tomato soup based noodles. Usually need to wait for seats and it may be hard to get the staff's attention.
Unpretentious, homely food that's gonna make you wanna go back for more.
The place is popular and hard to get a seat during lunch hours but i dont really like beef noodles
