This school is highly recommended!! My boyfriend and I spent a week in Miguel de Cervantes learning Spanish and living there and wished we had the time to stay longer. They have an amazing deal for both the stay and the lessons. The school is located in the city center and close to places to eat drink and shop, and to any transportation you need.
In a week, we learned so much from our amazing teacher, Elsa. She was patient, kind and made us feel comfortable to try to babble in Spanish (we we're beginners) while being proffesional and always challenged us. We learned far more than we expected and had fun doing it (even singing songs and playing games).
In the evenings the kitchen, which was adjacent to the dining room became a social place. We would cook our dinner (the kitchen was fully equipped) while chatting with anyone who came through and would usually end up eating together with some of the other residents. This made the whole experience so communal and fun! By the end we were so sad to leave everyone and we had a big and hilarious goodbye dinner together!
Our host Ilsi was the nicest, funniest and most hard working person we'd ever met! She helped in any way we needed. She organised activities for the students, like an unforgettable trip to the hot baths (with the fabulous Linda!) and a great cooking class with Elsa. The highlight was when Sary, the school's director took us (in her private car) together with her daughter and Ilsi to the water park Xocomil. It was a spontaneous idea, and we had no idea what to expect, but it was absolutely f***ing amazing. It was fun to hang out with them and the water park was so much fun, and Sary was a great and generous host. The whole day was perfect.
So if you're really serious about learning Spanish there is no question that you should go here. You'll get quality lessons at a great price. And if you want to make the experience even better, sleep at the school!
Hopefully we'll be able to come back someday :)
I discovered Miguel De Cervantes through a friend who recommended taking Spanish classes at the school before carrying out my journey through Central and South America. I arrived at the school, as a guest and a student, unsure of what all to expect and very soon realized that I had joined a family that was happy to assist me with anything I needed. My one month stay turned into two, and would have been extended if I didn’t have a friend to meet elsewhere.
ACCOMMODATIONS:
The rooms are clean and contain all that you need. The kitchen is large and is constantly kept clean, along with the bathrooms. Ilsy, the superwoman who stays on site and oversees the daily happenings at the school, goes above and beyond to assist guests with anything (arranging transportation, finding a doctor, laundry, etc.) and is also just a great and entertaining person to converse with in general. :)
SPANISH CLASSES:
I spent about a month taking classes with Pedro. He was an extremely patient teacher and immediately picked up on how I learn best. Some days we’d study from the book, some days we’d chat, some days when I couldn’t store more info into my head, we’d step out for a snack. I highly recommend classes with him! I’ve also met the other teachers and they are all so fun and genuinely excited to teach their language.
If you’re considering Spanish classes or looking for a place to stay, I highly recommend checking out Miguel de Cervantes. The staff is great and the atmosphere is welcoming. I looking forward to returning one day and hope that future guests/students enjoy their time at Miguel de Cervantes as much as I did. :)
A superb place to stay and learn Spanish. The staff and teachers are fantastic people, all of whom made my stay fun and interesting.
My thanks to Ilsi, Sari and the rest of the gang at Miguel de Cervantes!
I attended Spanish school here for 2 months. I had such a great time. First off the teachers are amazing. My teacher was Rosario and she was really knowledgeable in her method of teaching. I got to know some of the other teachers as well they are fantastic. I felt right at home when I was attending classes because we had potlucks and activities to do every week. Ilsye is very helpful in all aspects. If you need anything she is always there for you. I really recommend attending classes here, I know there is a lot of schools but this one really is the greatest! Everyone is so friendly and kind and it feels like a family. I am going to miss everyone and I hope to return pronto!
P.s If you want to take salsa classes it is possible, you learn so much.
I stayed in the Miguel Cervantes guest house for 3 months. I had lived in other places in Xela, and around the world and I can honestly say this was one of the best places I have ever lived.
The house and kitchen is always immaculately clean and equipped with everything you could need. The vibe in the house is super sociable, as there are other students and guests staying, and always someone to have dinner or go out with, I met some really incredible people at my time at MC. I love how in the house we had a communal meal every Friday lunchtime with the students and teachers.
The host Ilsy and owner Sary are so warm and friendly; they really make you feel like part of the family. Even when I was by myself on Christmas and New Year, they invited me to their house for Christmas and out with their friends for New Year!
They offer really great and affordable classes too, and the teachers are really knowledgeable, professional and make studying Spanish really fun. I went from beginner to advanced in just 3 months, with living with Guatemalans and the teachers being around the house really helped with practicing speaking Spanish every day.
Thank you everyone at Miguel Cervantes for everything, I will always think of this place as my home from home, and can’t wait to return.
We stayed at Miguel Cervantes for 2 weeks. And I would like to start by saying I have never felt more welcome anywhere else I have ever travelled. Ilsie, is an incredible host that really would go to the ends of the earth for you. She was always helping us out as it was our first time in Guatemala and quite a change from Mexico!
The hostel is located pretty much right next to everything you could ever need. The market is literally around the corner and if that doesn't have what you need then the supermarket is across the road. You're one block away from Parque a Centro America, which is the main square of Xela, full of bars and cafes and bustling throughout the day and night. The rooms are an incredible price, paying what you would normally for a dorm but you get a private room, some even with private bathrooms. The place has warm showers and a fully equipped kitchen that leave little to be desired. Also the WiFi covers all places in the hostel so you're not going to find everyone huddled in the kitchen trying to get the best signal. I honestly couldn't recommend this place enough!!
I have stayed at this School for over 6 months. I liked it so much I went to europe and returned again. The staff and teachers are very friendly and there is alot of activities that keep you busy after hours. I have learnt so much and an´t wait to return again. Xela is a great town to live in. Muy Tranquillo!

Great school for both short term and long term Spanish learning, the school has a wonderful atmosphere, the prices are the best we found in Guatemala, the staff are very friendly and helpful and we loved the accommodation (both at the school and the homestay that the school organised for us). The after class activities are also a great way to see other, less touristy parts of Guatemala and learn more about the culture! Amazing overall experience!
GREAT little school & guest house. Nice, private rooms at a very decent price, great location and awesome staff.
I spent 5 weeks studying Spanish here and I loved it! Two of the weeks I lived here, and I'd definitely recomend this place! They're also helpful in finding you a local family with whom you can stay - That is recomendable as well :)
The school arranges trips, hikes and other activities. Don't miss out on the Friday-potluck which is a great and cosy tradition!
Highly recomendable!
