Don't go to this place, unless you have no other option.
I arrived when it was dark and other places were allready full. When i arrived i had to pay out front. There was no change, they would give it the next day. Next day the girl behind the desk simply said that nobody made a note for her so i could not have my change back.
Further when i arrived i did not get a key. They said doors will be open all night. I went out after she said that. When i came back at the hostel the gate was closed, i had to find another place. When i explained this the next day the girl was very indiffrent and said the door was open all night. I felt quite dumb. Later another traveler told me i had to open it from the inside out by putting my hand through the door. I feel like the receptionist should have told me this, especially when i asked specifically.
Also you have to pay for drinking water. Reception closes between 9 and 8, so in the evening and night there is no acces to drinking water.
I really did not like the whole atmosphere at this place. It seems as if the girls working here realy hate their job and help you as less as possible. I felt very unwelcome.response / report this review -

I don't recommend this hostel, I spent less than 3 hours and I left to find a new place to spend the night in San Marcos. The beds were awful, my friend just had a mattress on the floor! It was smelling urine and the girls at the reception don't speak English. Also there is no service. It's east to find another hostel much better for less more.

The bad reviews here are surprising. The beds are a bit uncomfortable but besides that this place is pretty good! Good WiFi and friendly staff.

I had a reservation via Hostelworld. When I arrived, the staff told me the room wasn't available anymore, with no sympathy whatsoever. They called the manager to let him explain how this could happen. He made me feel like I had to be sorry for them because of they had some problem with the internet. He had send an email which I never received. When I ask my deposit back, they gave me less then I payed because of a, for them, beneficial exchange rate. Strange that I have to pay for being treated rudely. When I showed the correct exchange rate, the staffmember ignored it and continued whatching youtube videos..

I found this place pretty poor for the price. The wifi is only available in the lounge area which is usualky filled with dogs lounging on the chairs - one of which bit me. The breakfast is pretty minimal and for the price I'd expect more. Oh and they charge you for water (refill not bottles) which is really poor for a hostel.

Q60 dorm.
Asked for a key but was not given one. No lockers. There are rats. There is no kitchen for guest use. The wifi does not reach a few feet away from checkin. The dorms have holes and welcome in the rats (my stuff was rat investigated). The staff is not very welcoming, no information about the town or area. No area to do yoga, or hammocks to relax. Cheap if you are desperate but I wish I would have spent a little more on anywhere else.response / report this review -

It's really 50/50 with this place, it has such a great atmosphere and the staff are incredibly friendly But the actual rooms aren't really up to scratch.
The easiest way is to explain thus is to list the pros and cons below:
Pros:
The price of the room (fantastic)
Staff are friendly
Great location
Atmosphere is great
Best breakfast I've had in a hostel
Cons:
WiFi is pretty poor
Water didn't run at all in my room and no hot water at all (even though there was supposed to be)
The rooms themselves are wooden makeshift so you can literally hear every footstep and every word spoken by the people above you (especially if you have unlucky room number 13)
Overall, I think the cons outweigh the pros but you get what you pay for and this place is GREAT on a budget.response / report this review -

I have never written a bad online review before but felt compelled to advise people to choose somewhere else to stay in San Marcos. The first room we were taken to was leaking water around the Base of the toilet and the inside of the toilet bowl was visible soiled. We had to ask to be moved to another room. We paid extra for a room with bathroom/shower. The shower didn't work (unless the staff closed off several valves?!) and the toilet didn't flush. Fair enough, I understand water shortages, but when we asked for a basin to flush the toilet from the barrel of water we were told to "find one up nearby the other toilets in the garden". Bear in mind it was dark and we had just arrived. anyway. We checked out the next day and when we mentioned these issues to the staff members we were told they were only here for three days and the owner is rarely available so they make do as best they can. It just seemed a bit grim and unloved. I would reccomend spending the extra 50Q and 50m walk up the road to Hotel Paco Real they were fantastic!

+ comfortable bed, friendly staff
- sometimes no running water, need to ask to heat water for showering. Dangerous electricity cable touching the metal door!
Breakfast in another place (Restaurant Fé): + good pancakes.
