This is definitely worth the extra few pounds. A great way to spend the day meandering your way down the rock. So many opportunities for great photos! And good exercise too!

Amazing place. Weather was amazing, so that helped. Cable car to the top of the rock, great views all the way. Monkeys to welcome you upon your arrival, do not feed them!!!.
Excellent bar and restaurant at the top, with very friendly staff and again, fantastic views.

Beautiful view from all around. We took the cable car up and walked down and visited different sites. Comfortable shoes and a bottle of water to have is recommended. Also maybe some snacks if you decide to walk around but keep it hidden away from the little monkeys eyes.

My experience may have been affected by the weather on the day - pouring with rain- but it was still an interesting trip. We are trying to travel cheaply so didn't pay the full price for visiting tunnels etc. We felt that a good walk around the reserve was what we needed. The rock cable car wasn't running on the day we visited which meant we were sharing the roads with an endless stream of taxis bringing people up from the town. It detracted from the experience. Especially the way the monkeys were used by the ones giving guided tours. They were given food to encourage them to ride on wing mirrors and car roofs for the entertainment of visitors. Sad to see animals being used for human amusement. The views from the rock are spectacular and well worth the hard uphill walk. The monkeys are really engaging. Babies completely irresistible!

Well worth a visit for the views and the monkeys. You can get the cable car all the way to the top of the rock and if feeling energetic you can walk all the way down. If you do walk down you will come to St. Michael's Cave which is worth a visit.
A word of advise about the cheeky monkeys. Keep in mind that they are wild and you are in their environment. Keep an eye on your bags as a German tourist had her back pack opened by the monkeys, who proceed to steal all her food while emptying her bag. The monkeys roam wild and are friendly unless you provoke them. By warned!!.
The views over Gibraltar, Spain and North Africa are spectacular and well worth the visit. There is a cafe offering good views and public restrooms. A number of viewing platforms to enjoy the views.response / report this review -

It is nice place to visit and see the natural beauty of the lime rock formation of crystal like structures due to seepage of rain water and formation of cave inside the rocks naturally. Nicely preserved and colourful lights makes it more beautiful to see inside the caves.

On a clear day.. A spectacular view Great to see the monkey's Go early in the morning as lunch time onwards starts getting a little busy so can only imagine the crowds in summer season

You have to go to the top , we took 2 different methods, first one was driving and we stopped at certain view points. Then we took cable car up and down which was nothing amazing. The monkeys are the high lights of the day. Be careful of any items poking out of your bag as the monkeys will go for it. If I had more time i would of loved to walk up.

A must to do if you are visiting Gibraltar! The cable car was closed when we visited, so we decided to walk. Be prepared for a lot of walking and lots of steps. We walked for about 8 hours and there was no chance to visit everything. The payment for the walkers is 50 cents. The signs and maps are very poor, so lots of time it was just guessing which way we go next. The st. Michaels cave is a must, stunning! After we walked down to Windsor bridge and there you can find the monkeys, by the way we didn't have any problems with them, they were very quiet. Enjoy ;)

The Upper Rock Nature reserve is the home of the Barbary Apes and here you can find a cafe/souvenir stand with the entrance to St Michaels cave - a natural cave with stalactites and stalagmites large enough to be used as a concert venue. The apes have no problem walking in and out of the cafe and need to be frequently chased out. Great views over the bay.

Could easily spend most of the day up here.
Be careful of the monkeys as they will go through your bag (even if it is on your back) most people had their rucksacks on their front and the monkeys didn't seem interested.
According to the information on the rock there are 24 money's on the upper rock, most of them seem to keep to themselves but there are a few that will follow you around.
There are no enclosures and the money's are free to roam, even across the restaurant roof!
Well worth a visit, you can either take the cable car here which costs £14.50 for an adult return. they run every 6 minutes so no need to rush around. There is also a mini bus service (separate company to the cable cars) which will take you on a tour of the rock. This can be booked in various places around the rock. If your feeling fit then you can also walk to the top.response / report this review -

Had a great trip in the rain! We took one of the taxi tours and was really pleased with the driver and the place. The monkeys are quite tame and are jumping up if they are invited to. We felt really safe with them, at least under the protection of the driver. Cool place and a must see when your in Gibraltar!

Such a beautiful place. To see wild monkeys in Europe is amazing. The place is kept clean and it was nice to see the monkeys are taken care of. Definitely worth a visit. I recommend walking it instead of going in a taxi. The walk is long but worth it.

A fantastic view point of Gibraltar. Well if Lavante allows it! Took the cable car up and it was a great way to see the peninsula. Do not take bags of food as the monkeys make a beeline for them Staff do warn everyone but no one believes them! Plenty to do and see at the top Lots of interesting walks.

Fantastic day out on top of the rock. Plenty of walking routes, stunning views and attractions. The macaques have to be seen to be believed, don't leave your bag unattended though.

Visiting the rock was the greatest experience I had in Gibraltar. Great views, especially at sunset. Extremely relaxing. And I didn't even mention the monkeys ;-)

A place steeped in history with some stunning views. Only downside was it was rather unkempt with lots of litter left strewn around. Probably down to the apes pinching tourists food. Thought it would have been better presented considering the price of the cable car.

The children really enjoyed our trip to see the monkeys. The cable car for a family is quite expensive but we all enjoyed it. Like other reviews have stated beware of the monkeys, they will rip food out your hands or bag. If you don't have any food you can get quite close to the monkeys and we got some great photos.

Well worth a visit if your on the rock. Can involve some walking if you want to take on all the attractions so best on a cool day. The apes are everywhere so beware!! Give them some respect and don't feed them.

Go to see the monkeys! Recommend you catch a tour bus (minivan) rather than the cable car and walking. The price for the can is 30€ per person and that includes the entrance ticket for St. Michael's Cave. The driver had drove us around all the sites on the Rock and gave a pretty detailed info. The price is comparable to taking the cable and paying to get into the cave. Catch the van at the place where you would get in the cable car, there's a bunch waiting there Parking is tough there, we found a spot around the corner in a parking lot that had a machine to give ticket. The machine takes BOTH Pounds and Euroits on very fine print.

Amazing experience and very odd as well as I and my family found this small country is part of Britain where we come from. All signs in english and Britain style as well. Can't go all the way to the top with car we rented, locals only. But during day they offer tour buses, which I think is well worth your money as we came with a child.

We took the cable car to the top then walked through all of the attractions along the way down. Keeping mind that it's a long trek, so allow 3 or 4 hours if you want to enjoy the stops rather than racing down! Depends on the time of year if the mid station for the cable car is open, if it's not then your options are continental walking to the bottom or steep steps back to the top for a return journey. The macaques are used to people but can steal bags/food so keep a respectful distance.

Its a huge rock, if you come to Gib this is the main attraction. Great views from the top. On a clear day you can see across to Morocco.

Nice and probably the only place to visit when on Gibraltar :-) , Plan ahead what you want to see and visit. You can take a cable car to the top or there are plenty of local travel agents who will drive you around in a small vans. Also you can walk to the top and on a sunny day it is probably the best option. Plenty of places to stop for lunch and see the monkeys.

Magical place! Loved the little walk up the rock. Bring comfy shoes and make sure you don't have food in your hands while animals around, they will try to take it and they might jump onto you! Beautiful view, it was a great experience, would go again definitely. :)

The reserve was beautiful and had stunning views!
I took the cable car up and walked to all the various points. Would not recommend for a sunny day or those not in very good condition to hike a lot, it's about a 10km (6.2mi) loop from the top to the bottom.
However, the sites are pretty cool. The lookout provides stunning panoramas, and on a clear day you can see Africa across the straight.
There are monkeys at the top that will grab you and steal your food. Only eat inside and keep all valuables inside a LOCKED bag. They can open zippers and plastic bags. Also, follow the signs to NOT feed them or like 100 swarm out of nowhere.
There are some old ruins that are climb at your own risk.
The caves inside the rock are pretty cool, though could do without the music and "hippie" lights.response / report this review
