We got in free due to the Independence Day celebrations, but we would have happily paid with the amount of artwork displayed, and the quality of said pieces.
There was a decent variety of both original Finnish pieces and international pieces, with my personal favourites being the Daffy and Scrooge McDuck pieces which were a definite surprise.
Such a great place where art meets people, all people not only sophisticated art lovers. The building itself was built in the late eighteen hundreds and is worth visiting just for that. Regular ticket is 15 euros, museum pass suits, too. Permanent exhibition includes many Finnish she art masterpieces and the variety of collections is impressive.
One of the best art museums in the Nordics, is the Ateneum in Helsinki. Their collection is marvellous as you can easily spend a day looking at the permanent collection alone, besides that they currently have an excellent exhibition with von Wright brothers and there are some fantastic nature and animal paintings. Along side the permanent collection there are dotted pieces of the national gallery of Ducksburg, a nice collection of Donald Duck themes. Plan for a full day with lunch in their restaurant which has an excellent menu. You will find the museum just across from the central station and the admission is €15.
Located within a very grand building the art on display here is mostly traditional landscape and portrait paintings. The staff are friendly and helpful. However it is €15 for an adult and there was only one floor of art open on the day of our visit. I think usually there is another floor but that was closed. I think really if you're going to close half the museum then the tickets should be half price too.
All in all though, if traditional art is your thing then it's worth a visit.
Best art gallery in Helsinki. The architecture alone is worth checking out. The Art pieces are simply stunning and the adjacent cafe has excellent pastries.
Great museum with a variety of works. They aren't scared to mix eras or genres in this museum and I love that! Quite a bit of interactive art. Would recommend!
The collection in this museum is definitely not huge, but still, there are many pictures (and some sculptures) to see from time periods ranging approximately between 18 and 20 centuries. Lots of modern art. Lots of pictures by Finnish artists, which are nearly all good, especially those depicting nature, legends (Kalevala) and life.
There is also a big exhibition about Alvar Aalto, most well-known Finnish architect.
And the building is great both on the outside and on the inside.
Really beautiful art museum! We spent only a few hours here and I felt like we were able to take so much in in such a short amount of time. Great displays and easy to navigate. Highly recommend.
Excellent location and magnificent rooms, the price is totally worth it.
Always good. Depending on what's being shown, it will take 1-2 hours to walk around the place.
Lots of nordic art - which is new to me - and there is some really nice paintings in here that are worth checking out.
Very nice building, with a great permanent collection of finnish art. And nice temporary exhibitions. For exemple about Modigliani this winter. But the price is quiet expensive.
Some of the most notable pieces of Finnish art are in the Ateneum. There is also a changing theme in the top floor, which is usually advertised outside the building. The flow of the museum is nice because of the circling shape, and the cafe in the middle is a nice touch in the summer.
