H: I remember the “memory drug” you shared from Mexico. John Cahill suddenly recalled his childhood German and was able to write a decent if dull poem on demand. The validity of the German was confirmed by a couple of native speakers. I think one of them was Lenny Geiger who ended up interviewing my nephew for Middlebury.
P: I remember an aphrodisiac named té de damiana, that you can get at the outdoor Mercado Libertád in Guadalajara, slow-acting but effective. But I remember no memory drug.
H: My comment was about the “-polpus” ending you used ;-)
If the transaction you mention took place in the early part of the last decade – with banks lending at less than their cost of capital – it would explain what happened in the real estate market and subsequently the broader financial markets.
P: It was 8 years of an administration that ignored the middle class. All the job growth through the Bush administration was in entry-level service sector jobs. In an appreciating real estate environment, middle America, in order to maintain its standard of living, tapped until their home equity. Eventually that bubble burst. It wasn't unethical lenders. It wasn't even America's laudable policy of putting a larger share of the body politic into their own homes. It wasn't neg am loans and the abuse thereof. It was executive level dereliction of duty. An administration -- god knows what kind of country they thought they would leave to their grandchildren -- intent on building walls around white Christian males and their compounds.
H: Do you remember Clark Reiner from Middlebury? He was in the class between us I believe and may have been at Thunderbird for a time. He joked about being related to Rob and Carl Reiner but given that his father was a Knight of Malta or some such Catholic luminary (he had a medal of some kind conferred by the Pope I was told), he was clearly teasing. Anyway, after losing touch with him shortly after graduation, he reappeared in London soon after I first got married (he had stayed with me following my freshman year for a week or two during the summer) and told me about what his career. He worked for a financial firm called “Bear and Bull” or something like that – not quite a bucket shop but very much an aggressive sales-focused brokerage house – and made enough money in his second year to create a buffer that would allow him to indulge his creative fantasies for several months and keep the parents happy in the process. He flew to LA with the dream of becoming an actor, and was a houseguest of some family friends with Hollywood connections. The day he arrived, they told him they were throwing a big party and hoped he didn’t mind the noise given that he was probably exhausted from travel. He took a nap and by the time he woke up and showered, things were in full swing. He walked down the stairs and made a beeline for an attractive young woman and they started chatting. She asked what he did and he mentioned his wanting to be an actor. When he asked her the same question, she told him she was a casting director and wanted to screen test him. Within the week, he landed a significant role in a movie acting with De Dee Pfeiffer – Michelle’s sister. I don’t remember the name but it was apparently a vehicle to launch her career – we know how that went.
P: I have to take this in pieces. I do remember Clark Reiner. His father was the Papal Legate and while some VIPs were touring the campus they walked into his room at the Chat and he was jacking off.
I stand by my spelling.
What else do I need to set you straight on?

I did not know about the onanistic surprise. By the way, why is it called that since the Biblical incident is more akin to coitus interruptus? Was his father with the tour group at the time?

Another beautiful church in Tallinn. This one is outside of Old Town but is an easy, quick walk to get to.
