You might think the medieval theme with its costumed staff a tad tacky, but don't let that put you off. The food is excellent -- and plentiful (this is not nouvelle cuisine, after all!!), the ambience is pleasant, and the service very friendly. They say they only use ingredients available in the Middle Ages (so no potatoes or tomatoes -- but they make an exception for coffee). You probably will have eaten enough not to want a dessert, but try the Rose Pudding -- it's quite light and has an interesting taste. As everywhere in the Baltic, the wine is overpriced, but who cares when the beer is so good? Incidentally, talking of beer, they encourage you to try their Honey Beer. My advice is: DON'T!

It was a hot summer's day and so we decided to eat inside. What a great choice that was!

This is a theme restaurant, focused on medieval dining. The meals are simple, meat and fish heavy and served in a dark, moody atmosphere that sets the scene perfectly.

I enjoyed a blend of sausages and my wife a platter of fish and seafood. I think the dark lighting worked very much to its advantage as the flavours were unspoilt by what you might be able to see.

(All washed down with honey beer and water).

The lady who served us (dare I say "Serving Wench" as that was the style that was portrayed) was helpful, her English excellent and she threw herself into the part brilliantly. She even seemed willing to accept my children in payment for the meal!

I think if we'd eaten outside it would've "just" been a restaurant. Going inside made it something special.

Some interesting beers and a nice spot to people watch in the old town - or sit inside in the medieval candlelight. Service super slow and hard work. Had to work at flagging down staff each and every time I wanted something. They clearly know it’s passing tourist trade and it doesn’t matter if they are understaffed.
Ok prices for the Old Town. Food looked quite nice/interesting, although a little pricey. I’d opt not to eat in these gimmicky tourist places unless you really want to.

Olde Hansa is one of the gems of Old Town Tallinn - the best place for a celebration or if you want to be treated like a medieval Lord or Lady. Though it is a bit on the pricey side, it is totally worth it given the excellent level of service, delicious food, and the unique atmosphere. It is often perceived as being a bit too touristy but many locals also frequent this unique establishment. The Game Fillet (Elk and Wild Boar when we visited) served with a red wine and creamy mushroom sauce plus a variety of sides, is a must for those looking to sample the best of Olde Hansa. The Filling Cake with Saffron Pudding is also to die for. If you do decide to visit, make sure to get a table on the first floor so that you can enjoy the sounds of Renaissance musicians.

To a seasoned traveler, your first inclination might be, “tourist trap”, and you would be wrong 100%. An absolute time capsule and as close as any of us will get to stepping back into 1501 without Doc Brown’s DeLorean from Back To The Future.

The menu is absolutely amazing and completely detailed. Starve yourself and prepare for a long, drawn out meal. Amazing, unique beers, ales, ciders and spirits. If you’re a Lord of the Rings fan or Game of Thrones fan, you will love the vibe even more!

Very nice restaurant. Medieval decoration and all waiters and waitresses dress the traditional costumes. Customer services and communication was excellent. The honey beers is a must try. I tried the pork leg with white bread and herb and they was wonderful, esp. with honey beer. Highly reccomended!

This is one of the best food & drink exprience i have ever lived. First of all, you escape from today, goes back to 1950's and you really live in the past. Second, food was amazing, stuff were funny, so gentle and extremely professional. Third, Music was fantastic, decoration and lighiting is so nice. I strongly recommend this place.

The food and the staff is incredible. Be prepared for dim lighting and good ale. They have a small range of spirits and ales which Olde Hansa makes and they are known to be good even abroad.

This place is MUST SEE !!!
It’s not cheap but you will get full service for your money.
I game from Canada to celebrate my birthday with my friends there with light snack and drink.
When they found out that it’s my birthday, we got free snaps and sweets as present. It was 8 of us.
Super super lovely people. Full time worth to fly from Canada :)

Probably the most atmospheric place I have ever visited. Candle low light, medieval music, very friendly and good service. You will feel yourself very comfortable.
Also very delicious honey beer here. I suggest you to try it.

If you think this is touristy, don't let that get in your way of enjoying a fantastic atmosphere and food. They go to great lengths to give you an authentic medieval experience from the authentic food and drink recipes to the hand made furnishings and tableware. The staff also do their best to act the part and are great fun! Be sure to visit the gift shop.

Very nice. A taste of middle age. Waiters and waitresses are very polite and in fancy dresses! Musicians playing old instruments while eating. The decor is very authentic. Love the place and recommend it. The place to eat when in Tallinn!

A chance stop, "let's try this one" was a fortunate stop. We were just looking for a place to dine away from the square (cheaper prices), sat here and proceeded to enjoy the experience. Dined upon the Himalayan lamb dish. The waiter took the time to explain what was in the meal and how it was prepared. The service was good, beer was cold, staff freindly.

On our 8 week holiday it was one of the few places we left a tip. The waiter thanked us to which we replied "No worries". Having spent time in WA, the phrase was enough for him to pick up we were from Australia.

My opinion of the place? If we have a chance to visit Tallinn again, Olde Hansa would be on our list of places to revisit.

The history of the Olde Hansa is what brings you in. The wait staff wear period costumes which are great. The beers are great. The crockery is rustic. The decor is medieval and the food is superb. The slow braises are exceptional.

Not sure if this is authentic, but it is amazing! Candle lit dark rooms decorated in medieval ornaments. Drinks honey beer, spiced herb beer or cinnamon beer in jars. Tasting platters if you want a preview into the past. Of you prefer enjoying the beautiful weather, they have an outdoor terrace.

Definitely worth a stop if you are in the old town. Food is surprisingly good as my expectations were a little low going in assuming they were capitalizing on the medieval theme. Staff do well staying in character and the place really looks the part, great fun.

Nice restaurant near the Town Hall Square. Medieval feeling in dark, candle-lit rooms. Costumed waiters are very friendly and talkative, speaking various languages. The food is very good and you must try the mead! The atmosphere is quite cool and it's kind of romantic. Prices are a bit high, but compared to the other restaurants in Tallinn, normal.

This place is so amazing! All the staff are constantly in character and they play the part of middle ages tavern staff admirably well with enthusiastic gusto. The interior decor is candlelit with wooden tables and chairs, all very in keeping with the medieval theme and the menu is also a work of art. They serve a lot of "exotic" meats including boar and elk, as well as vegetarian and regular options. For the rich and brave they even have bear at 50EUR. All round I loved this place to bits, sure it's expensive like any themed restaurant but this one stands out from the rest from their sheer dedication in all aspects of the experience.

In brief: This is a place you go to enjoy the atmosphere at a slightly higher price, not for the food.
Olde Hansa is a beautifully decorated medieval restaurant in the center of old Tallin. The staff is dressed as in medieval times and if you are lucky enough, you may even enjoy some medieval music. The menu (which is available in several languages) also tries to resemble the medieval age, thus it is heavy of meat and low in veggies. We ordered one beef and one pork dish. Both plates were served with pickled vegetable, a pastry, grains, and a white sauce. The taste were pretty similar, on the bland greasy side, although from the menu description the dishes were supposed to be quite different .The beef was overcooked and tough and the pork was quite dry.
Would I visit again? Sure, I loved the restaurant's atmosphere, but I would probably just go for beer.

Very good service, The dark honey and cinnamon beer was really nice. The combination of meats, berries and veggies on the platter go very well. Prices are a little on the higher side as compared to the other medieval taverns around, but that is justified by the overall experience which was a very pleasant one. Would love to visit them again.
