We had a nice time here. The place has a funny smell as do the rooms. But once you get past that it's okay. Very okay.

Room was damp, go for the top floor instead. Half the resort was shut down.
Food was excellent although I'd rather be able to eat anytime instead of set times. They only had one restaurant open in February and it was busy.
Sea is pretty rough most of the time, beach not very good (thin layer of sand with shells and stones underneath).
Pools are good but there's no swim up bar.
All this is a few months prior to change of ownership so could be totally different.

Just got back from Riu Merengue, stayed a week and enjoyed my vacation. The staff is friendly, the whole entertainment group is funny and talented. Two things that I didn't like is that people smoke around children, they should have smoking area. Second it's the internet situation : you can only get internet in the lobby! The food was good but repetitive. Activities are super and shows are great.

This resort is an amazing spot. The rooms are standards, food is exceptional, the beach is gorgeous. All three pools are lovely and well kept. Nelbi and Joel at the main front desk could not do enough to help with anything. You couldn't want for anything here. Lots to do and there are quite spots in the shade to do nothing. Glad we came

I stayed a week March 15 to 22 2018. The beach, grounds and property were great. The exterior of accommodations looked great. The room itself was very old, dark and dismal. No hot water in the mornings. A toilet that didnt flush properly, a strong odour of urine which necessitated keeping the fan and air conditioner on all night. Freezing cold at night and 1 thin blanket shared by two. Generally dirty. All restaurant, bar and groundskeepers were very friendly.

My husband and I were at this location from Feb 6-13 2018. We had such a wonderful with amazing memories. This resort is an hour from airport. All went very smoothly. Staff is excellent. Very friendly and out to please you in every way. Weather was for the most was beautiful. Had rain showers every night and a few during each day. They said this was very usual wet for this time of the year. But that didn't stop us from having fun and being in great spirits. Food was very good and such great varieties to pick from. You can eat all time along with the drinks. Never lack with the bars. Loved that part along with the beautiful walks and meeting many friendly people. We went to 2 excursions. 12 water falls and the cable car. The falls was amazing. Only thing we were disappointed in this was we couldn't take our camera with us at the falls and it costed $50.00 Us for us to purchase the cd with included our tour with the waterfalls. We didn't have enough money so we locked out on this cd. Have no pictures for this fantastic event to show others. Keep thinking of that. Personally we feel this should have included with our admission to this excursion. Hope they change that or at least let people know this before this going this event. Our room at beautiful and so clean. Our cleaning lady we so pleasant always worked hard. Had to share the decoration she put in our room for Valentines even though we were back home for Valentine. That was really sweet and I will not forget this. We had the ocean view. So it was always well enjoyed just to look outside and hear the waves with the amazing sweet sounding birds. The beach was beautiful but the water was very cold to go in. Refreshing. Had to wear water shoes in the water due to the rough stones. But overal all we had a very relaxing time and enjoyed the scenery with the friendly people. Thank you so much for everything.

Upscale resort? That's the funniest thing I've heard all day. It is an outdated, budget compound. The food is unrecognizable and mostly inedible, the air conditioning in the room is 1 step up from a broken fan, everything stinks of cigarette smoke and the phone reservation process was enraging. The only reason I am giving 2 stars are because the staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. Find somewhere else to go

I would never recommend this resort for women travelling alone or with teenage daughters. I went last week with my 15 year old daughter. Throughout the entire stay, she was hit on by staff members who made obscene gestures and openly ogled her. Even members of the security staff would stand and stare at her, while making lewd comments to the others. She was so uncomfortable that she refused to go to certain areas of the resort, including one of the pools. I didn't feel safe walking around the resort at night. One of the ladies I travelled with was followed by a group of staff members who were commenting about how they wanted to go back to her room with her. When I mentioned this to the front desk, they didn't seem concernedi also found many of the staff unfriendly and unwelcoming. The rooms were basic but clean and the resort itself was good value for the money. However, I would never go back here because of my experiences with the staff. I feel this resort tarnishes the RIU name.

    RIU MERENGUE

Surprised it is a 4 1/2 star resort.

It has it's pros and cons.

    Starting with the pros,

-Staff is great, helpful and willing to please.
    -Food buffet is decent/satisfactory.
    -nice clean beachfront property
-3 pool areas, 1 is a swim up bar however it is at the other RIU
    -outside is always cleaned attentively
-room bar/mini fridge restocked every 2 days
-1L bottle of water a day per room, but resort staff will gladly give you extras (very needed)
    -a/c worked fairly well (23C)
-clean linens, unlimited amount per room just call and ask front desk

    Now for the Cons,

-RIU bachata looked much newer and nicer then the RIUmerengue, their buffet was also much better and bigger with much more variety
-in order to book your 'restaurant' you MUST wake up by 6:30am to book your reservation, lineup outside the buffet doors of about 30-50 people starts at 645am and is closed by 7:10am fully booked (I booked a vacation to sleep in so I recommend not going to these 'restaurants')
-restaurant is a roped off section of the outdoor snack bar, I've never been to a resort with no restaurant
-went to the 'steakhouse' , horrible!! Don't book the restaurants
-very poor quality seafood, if any, disappointing
    -same food everyday, fresh however.
-smoking aloud indoors (except buffet room) meaning there is no where to go if you don't smoke
-pools closed at 6pm and bars close at 11 & 12
    -VERY outdated
-beds are yellow even brownish (old)
-mold in both of our rooms on the curtains, ceiling, walls and door trims (yes it is humid there)
-our 2nd room had a very bad leak in the ceiling when it rained
    -very musty-BRING TWO CANDLES
-both rooms had very bad shower heads, broken, so you had to hold it right up to shower
-multiple times towel service for the beach ran out of towels at 9-10am and didn't refill until 1-3 hours later (no biggie bring your own from the room)

With that said many people seemed to either love it or hate it.
I won't go back, but it wasn't that bad.
    Make the best of it.
But I don't recommend it, and it is certainly not 4 1/2 stars like it states.

We've travelled to many places in the Caribbean and this is the worst. Food- no large variety and very simple. Rooms- TERRIBLE, old, ugly, smelly, no luxury whatsoever and you can hear the noise coming from the workers yelling at each other in the morning. (Rm 1382) When I asked for a different room they told me no because they are booked. Having 3 kids is tough to move somewhere else.
Drinks- cheapnothing says class in this hotel. Paid $$$$ and is not worth it.
Worse experience ever! Terrible place. Horrible management.

A poor food and beverage service which is very repetitive on a daily basis and certainly does not meet the service quality received at other rui club hotels that I have stayed at in Mexico

No no no don't do it . I will speak to u the truth
    1. Staff are wayyy tooo forward and perverted it's disgusting, my daughters got barked at and flirted with constantly by the staff and there was an obvious age gap. One even asked to take me to the beach for sex.
    2. We have been asked many times to bring the staff food "get me a coffee "go bring me margarita " and no they weren't joking I payed for a resort for them to help me not me to serve them!
    3. They don't change the sheets! I stayed for a week the same stain has been on my sheet since I got there.
    4. Had to wait 2 hours to have access to an iron but had a time limit to use it when I got it
    5. I recommend anyone to pay alittle extra and stay at the riu bachata instead of marangue.

TL;DR; This is the worst hotel you can visit in the DR.

It's a really small hotel with only one pool for everyone, and a small one for the children, the rooms are nice but they use old-style keys which are uncomfortable to carry. The food, is awful they serve the same thing for breakfast, lunch and dinner, everyday!!! Unbelievable! The service is the worst, looks like the employees are bad paid because they don't care about the customers, they already closed one of their hotels because ppl don't like coming here. The pool closes at 6pm, they only have 3 person for entertainment and they don't have enough activities for the ppl, I heard a lot of ppl complaining about not getting basics in the rooms like water, the night show is so so, the music is ok, the show itself is a little repetitive and the performers dont have a lot to show they look old and destroyed, and it's not cheap based on the price/service trade. Bars closed at midnight and the disco sells the drinks so it's not a great place for getting drunk. There are many other downsides the only good thing is the sea and you can get it anywhere here! My advice go to other hotel!

    Where to Being!

Registration: Awful. Took a very long time to register a group of 12 adults. All of whom knew all the needed info; the receptionist just seemed unskilled for her job.

Rooms: They are the only good thing about this hotel, in my opinion. Spacious and clean. But the TV was very small and the channel selection sucked.

Internet Service: It's 2017 and you can't even offer cheap internet for free? The only free one is in the lobby area only which is stupid. Why not have it all over the place? Have a faster connection available for $ as well but come on!

Pool and Drinks: They must make their own drinks or something because they only had these weird brands nobodys heard of.

The pool closes at 6 or 7PM (can't remember exactly), are you kidding me? Why not pay lifeguards to be on duty after dark? People are trying to have FUN! and your hotel has very little to do anyways!

Why the hell do you have to drain the pool every single day?! There are better ways to keep a pool clean, stop being cheap!

Food: Absolutely awful!! Almost every day it was the same things!

Disco: Very expensive drinks. It was always empty.

Staff: Some were ok but most of them were very rude and seemed tired of their jobs (which is really not my problem!). Customer service overall was awful!

Overall a very unpleasant experience. I would never go back or recommend it!

The rooms are very good, very clean and tidy and the cleaners are fantastic. The food looks OK but everyone had upset stomachs when we were there the entire time - so did everyone we met - it's never happened before to us anywhere but there is obviously a serious problem with this place and hygiene in the restaurant.. Because of the isolated location there are no options to avoid the contaminated foods either by eating out.. The staff in the restaurant won't serve you unless you are prepared to tip.. I've never seen that before in the Caribbean.. Everyone is normally so friendly.. Avoid the whole place if you can..

This resort offered reservation dinning in addition to buffet style. But it is not true. They show pictures of a great steak house but after waiting an hour in line we were served what can be best described as shoe leather. The manager told us too bad and wouldn't even call anyone. This is the worst resort we have been too. This place isn't worth spending a minute at

5th Time at the Riu But Won't Be Going A 6th Time Jan 16-23/17
We booked this hotel in the summer of 2016 and as returning customers, requested a specific room. When we got there, we were given a different room and it was horrible. The mildew/musty smell was overwhelming, the a/c didn't work, the ceiling fan didn't work, there was a cockroach in the drawer, mold on the bathroom ceiling and water leaking all over from the bar frig. We could just imagine all the mold under and behind it. When we weren't in the room, we left our patio door open to air out the room and when we were there, we also had our front door open to circulate the air because of the smell. They advertise clock radio and a hair dryer but had neither. My husband requested white rum 5/6 times and we never did get it.
We have always found the food fine and have never been sick and had great service from Alex, Carmen and Miguel in the dining room.
If the rooms are ever updated, we may return, but not until something is done!

My husband and I enjoyed the resort very much. We stayed in the ocean front suite and found the room to be clean. We did not see any water-bugs in our room however we did hear from another guest they did have one or two. The resort solved the problem by spraying inside the room. Staff was always friendly and really tried to make your vacation special. It would be nice if some of the bars stayed open later than 6pm. The late night bar closed at midnight however the sister resort does have a 24 hour bar. Drinks were made well, strong and quickly. We never had to wait more than 3 minutes for a drink. My husband and I thought the food buffets had a wide variety and consisted of good quality. We were somewhat disappointed with the pool snack bar as it seems it is left overs from breakfast, lunch with hot dogs and hamburgers added to the mix. We just made sure we ate while the buffets were open. We also were discourage there was no food after 1am? We had munchies in the wee hours of the morning and nothing was open until breakfast. So we were confused on the 24 hour statement used to describe the resort. Entertainment during the day was full of games and activities such as dancing lessons or boccie ball. The evening entertainment was just alright but seemed to pick up on Friday night. The disco opens at 11pm and you must pay for your drinks as they are not part of the all-inclusive package. The resort itself is very clean. It seemed the staff was always working to make sure bathrooms were in order and empty cups were picked up. We did have a wonderful time and found it to be as good as other all inclusive we have stayed at. Would recommend to a friend for sure.
