Great place for visit, really interesting story behind the construction and bombardment of the church and the reasons to make it a museum, well worth a visit

The trick here is to look for the big Museum sign taking you downstairs. There is a fascinating museum dedicated to the bombing of Hamburg there that actually angered me in a way I didn't expect at all. I felt awful for the Germans. I felt angry at them too! How could they do that to the Jews!! How could the British kill so many innocents, left by the Germans to die horrible deaths! How could the Germans fight this story from being told?!?
Needless to say the memorial made a lasting impression ( it's in German and English) . On top of that, the history of the church and elevator ride to the top was breathtaking too. All round worth the visit!response / report this review -

The observation deck at the top of the tower offers breathtaking views of the city, with unobstructed sights of both the Rathaus and the Elbphilharmonie, while the underground museum gives more depth to the experience, detailing the historical perspective on the war that reduced the former church into a pile of rubble.

Although covered in scaffolding when we visited, this place is very moving. 5 euros gets you a ticket for the lift and museum. We went up in the lift first and photos from 1943 showed the city after the Firestorm of the July of that year. These are positioned so you can see the view then and now, in some cases there is nothing to recognise. The words are in German and English. We then went back down and proceeded to the museum in the crypt. Please note, once past the desk, proceed straight ahead! Don't turn left by the model of the church (as we did) as we toured the museum backwards! The museum explains not only the history of the church, but also the airstrikes on the city and life during that time. We spent an hour in the museum. Overall an enlightening, yet simmering, experience. Highly recommended.

At this time there is construction happening and so there is no view at the top. It is only one euro to ride the elevator

I liked visiting this place. The St. Nikolai church was destroyed in the second world war and the citizens decided to keep in the same state to show the world how war can do.
