We were not there when it was open, but it was still beautiful from the outside with a nice tower.
When we came by later there was a small Christmas market with several neat booths.response / report this review -

It was super busy when we went there, and we were pretty much sardined in. The tour seemed expensive for what it was so we skipped it and went .to look at the crypt instead. Of course there was a Christmas market there so there were so many people we could all barely fit (and the crypt was pretty claustrophobic as it was). I know it is the big landmark of Hamburg, but it seemed all too touristy. The church itself had a service so we could look I side but not actually tour it, and there was an air of newness and freshness that I actually found a little off putting.
If you go to an old historic church you want it to be an old historic church - not a guided gift shop. The grounds are nothing special, and of course the toilet costs money too. All in all, a walk to St. Nicklaus is much more worth it.response / report this review -

Very nice and bright church! Beautiful architekture and easy to get up with the lift if you don't want to walk, but I would recommend to walk. ;) They offer great concerts. So nice that a person still plays the trompete from the towers twice every day.

It's very impressive. With a five euro fee you can climb the tower and have a spectacular view of the harbor and Hafen city, and with a small two euro contribution, you can sit in the church and listen to some music

Iconic church of Hamburg. It was broken and rebuilt three times. Magnificent architecture. Take 450 steps to get a spellbounding view of the city and harbours. Inside of the Church is no less grand

One of the largest churches in Hamburg, the inside barogue decorations are amazing, don't miss climbing up the tower for a magnificent view, although the 5Euro fee for the tower is a bit of expensive, but it's worthy.

Saint Michael's Church is one of the city's most famous buildings. Its baroque architecture is stunning. The views of the city from the top are great. However, there are many churches of the same kind in Germany as this one isn't particularly outstanding.

Church itself is worth a walk around but sparsely decorated so if visiting for general interest can be done quickly. Paid extra to get in the Crypt which was setup for a lunch reception and took all of 5 mins (I think our entry was discounted because of this). The lift to the tower proved an ordeal, we got off at level 08 which is one floor below the roof as my wife wasn't sure she'd like the height. We then found the lift call button was broken and couldn't call the lift back. In the end I had to climb the stairs to level 10 and ride the lift down leaving my wife hyperventilating and glad to get back to terra firma.
