I had a meal in the restaurant. First the wait staff took their sweet time just to bring me a menu, even though it was not busy. They were just talking among themselves within view of me and letting me wait. When the waitress finally came over to my table she was chewing on something. I felt that was wrong. I ordered a beer and a buffalo burger. The buffalo meat's attributes were praised in the menu. I asked for medium rare, since that's how you can enjoy the qualities of good meet the best. She said: "They typically make it medium or more." So I asked her to ask the kitchen staff if they could make it medium rare. She came back some time later to say no, the kitchen staff only serve it well done. By this time I had received my beer, which was the only one in Bavaria that had the acidic taste of a stagnant beer line, and I should have just cancelled the order and gone somewhere else. Alas, I didn't as I didn't fathom just how bad a burger could be. It arrived some time later. The meat was absolutely flavorless, not because it was well done but because it seemed to have been frozen as a patty. Its consistency, color and flavor were that of the lowest grade meat and bore no resemblance of the description in the menu. I could not even be sure it was actually buffalo meat. The burger bun was stale and equally low grade bread. The sauce evoqued also the image of a low-quality, store-bought product. I declined the offer of dessert. The burger was priced as a premium meal, and everything about it screamed "cheap, low-quality".
The ambiance of the restaurant was modern and upbeat, which I usually like. However, it was truly a poor fit with the town of Dinkelsbühl and with the building itself. It felt forced and out-of-place.

In four weeks of having lunch and dinner in the Bavarian cuisine sphere, this experience was a negative outlier for food quality, quality of beer (!), professionalism and courtesy of the wait staff, value of the offering, and ambiance. I strongly recommend to go anywhere else In Dinkelsbühl. There is a great number of restaurants. All of them are better than Hezelhof by any measure. I would give it zero stars here if that was possible.

“So glad we stopped. Best night's sleep ever.”

Location: Dinkelsbühl is such a small town that location doesn’t really matter. It is most likely that you would travel to this town by car. With this in mind be sure to contact the hotel in advance for one of the three parking spots they can reserve 50 metres from the hotel.

Rooms: The hotel is split into two sides. We stayed in a room in the newly refurbished (mid 2013) side above the restaurant (Luis) that also serves the complimentary breakfast. The rooms are very comfortable and well designed. Actually nearing the completion of our round-the-world trip as I write this, I can state that the hotel rooms were among the most comfortable on the trip. The bed in particular deserves a mention. My wife and I have very different preferences when it comes to bed surfaces. At breakfast we both instantly remarked to each other how well we slept due to the bed. I would love to purchase one, it was that good.

Staff: Extremely helpful. I emailed the staff prior requesting a car spot. They replied quickly and friendly, and showed us to our room personally explaining everything that was required. They made us feel welcome. The only exception to this was one of the restaurant staff members. Germanic staff can be stone faced as part of the culture, but one staff member in particular was rude once I asked more than a couple of questions about their menu.

Would I stay again: Yes. I’ve already highly recommended it to friends and would choose to stay here more than a single night even if to get a decent nights rest.

Rating Sleep quality 5/5 - So good that I want to go back an change the rest of my 40+ reviews and downgrade them to 3/5 or less. It really is that good!

Only let down - the rude staff member at Luis restaurant attached to the hotel.
