  It is a must-go if you're in Thüringen. The visit in itself is extremely painful, but it's something that has to be seen and never forgotten. Besides, if you don't want to pay for a guided tour, you can just wander around on your own.

  I accidentally visited Buchenvald in 1986. I seemed to be in a very special place, there were bus loads of Russian soldiers arriving regularly, the whole site was immaculate, fresh flowers on every memorial.
  
  I offered to photograph one of the Russian soldier groups, they seemed surprised.
  
  The visit was a special time in my life

  Really well presented information and solemn look at a sad hard place to discuss. The map looks bigger than it is, bit it's easy to go for 2-3 hours and get a feel for the place or all day and study all the different levels of Nazi and Soviet usage. The displays are outstanding.

  Definitely a must visit. There are not a lot of buildings remaining but seeing the site is worthwhile. The crematorium is still standing and there is a good museum exhibit in another building. The tower at the memorial is impressive with good views.

  Visiting this memorial has been a life-changing experience for me. One should be aware that such a visit is emotionally draining. Children shouldn't visit at all or only with adults. The guided tour answers all your questions, the place itself is still haunting today and numerous exhibitions enrich the visiting experience. Words aren't enough to describe the horror that has happened in this place. I can only recommend any citizen to visit such a place once in a lifetime. May the souls of those who died in this place rest in peace.

  it a great historic place to visit.. the day i went it warm but as this place was on the top of a hill it was tooo windy . the movie presentation and other thing was very demonstrative. do visit and understand the history .

  Is this the camp that the movie, "The Boy In The Striped Pajamas" was based on? The camp in the movie/book was hidden inside a forest as well..

  It's a concentration camp that holds an interesting story behind it. People in the city had no clue as to what was happening there -- it was hidden inside a forest. However, when it was liberated the army had the whole city march there, to see with their own eyes what had happened. Profound and eye-opening experience.
