I came here because Im the fan of the tragic story of Cecilia - look at her statue in front of church - written by Cirilo Villaverde. (great writer)
Cirilo Villaverde.
This neo-Gothic church stands on La Loma del Santo Angelo. With its pure lines vertical is in contrast with the massive baroque structures characteristics of Havana Vieja. Originally built in 1690 and rebuilt in 1866, Santo Angel Custodio was the site of baptisms is that of José Martí Félix Varela, a priest, patriot and educator.
It's also the place where the writer Cirilo Villaverde imposed on the main scene of his novel Cecilia Valdes (1812-1894). A plaque on the wall opposite the door of the church praises the portrait of Villaverde of Cuban life of the 19th century. Villaverde, in fact, made literary history with social realism telling the inhumane treatment of slaves. Martí, Varela and Villaverde were all key figures for the cause of Cuban independence
En esta iglesia hice mi primera comunion con el padre Sergio, amo ese lugar, alli encontre a Dios aprendi a amarlo a el y solo a el. Dios nos ama.
Cool old church
Very relaxing little square with a church, a bar/restaurant and the shop of the top fashion designer of Cuba. Great to read up on the tragic story of Cecilia (statue) written by Cirilo Villaverde.
