I REALLY HATE Places Like This! They make me fall in love, and I never want to leave!
Zancudo is a magical fisherman’s paradise tucked away in the puterenas province on the southern coast of Costa Rica. I hate places like these because the fishing is so incredible, that every other destinations seem to be a waste of time when targeting these coveted species.
There’s no place else I’ve been that I had blue marlin come up in the spread within the hour on day 1 (true story). There’s no other place where you can catch such a variety of trophy and game fish species consistently. There’s not many places you’ll find where tuna breach the surface eating baits behind spinner dolphin putting on an aerial show on the surface.
The fishing offshore is phenomenal - frigates and other birds are common, along with spinner dolphin to find tuna. Live bait is a breeze to catch daily, and used to “drop back” to big fish, along with chin-weighted ballyhoo, and small tunas. During the seasons it’s common to get several billfish in a day -- large blue marlin, sailfish, and mahi-mahi were all seen and caught during our trip.
I hate places that are so incredibly meticulous that I can’t nit-pick anything. Fresh food, clean rooms, amazing ocean side beach access just steps away.
Clean boats, brand new tackle, and incredible accommodations make Zancudo a bucket list type of experience. Once you arrive at the lodge, you will only worry about your next bite, and if you brought enough sun screen (don't worry, they'll have some:)
Fishing for 10-12 hours a day is not easy on the body, so it’s fantastic having a fresh Tica breakfast with a coffee to go on the boat. The little details at the lodge are amazing. Knowing you can walk off the boat, order a drink at the bar, and talk about the days catch before your gourmet dinner is served.
The food at the lodge is above and beyond. Access to top notch sea food makes for a menu that can’t be beat. The preparation is always made of fresh ingredients, and there’s always fresh baked bread, and incredible desserts. A meal like this at the end of the day makes everything right with the universe.
The staff is friendly, helpful, and always attentive through the course of a stay. The service standard has been set high. Nightly laundry service means no fish smelling clothes in your return bags, and freshly stocked coolers every morning mean you have a truly “walk on/ walk off” fishing charter.
The fishing captains are all very knowledgeable and friendly. They are helpful and patient with newer anglers, and used to putting experienced anglers on world-class and record breaking fish. They are competitive, love to put customers on big fish, and work hard to single handedly run their boats without the assistance of a mate. No need for second guessing - these guys catch the big fish daily. Zancudo truly is a hands-on fishing experience!
I hate places like this because I will never get to spend as much time there as I’d like. I’m a hater, I’m a curmudgeon. I’m very particular about things. I don’t like leaving my wonderful fishery of Miami and the Florida Keys much — but this place only makes me hate that I won’t be back soon enough to eat like a celebrity chef, and fish like Hemingway.response / report this review -

We had an amazing trip to the lodge during Easter weekend. Gregg and the crew were amazing and they made sure our stay was perfect. The food was 5-star and the accommodations on par with the finest resorts. I very highly recommend The Zancudo Lodge. You will not be disappointed

Everything was perfect. Our transfers to and from San Jose were flawless. The fishing was spectacular. The captains were well equipped to put us on big fish. The lodge and rooms were beautiful, with excellent customer service from the wake up call to the last call at night. The concierge assisted us with everything that we needed. I would highly recommend The Zancudo Lodge.
