Visited the Sea Turtle Conservancy Visitor Center and gift shop, and was greeted by Mary, who was very knowledgeable about the Sea Turtles that nest in the area. She showed a very informative video, followed by a tour of the small educational facility. The Sea Turtle Conservancy is an amazing organization, that has been working in Tortuguero since 1959 to educate people, help eliminate the threats to sea turtles, such as poachers, and to do what is necessary to help bring these beautiful creatures back from near extinction. The research station is manned year-round, with additional research assistants during nesting season. The staff surveys the 18-mile stretch of beach, documenting Sea Turtle nesting events. This organization does NOT offer tours to the public. They are involved in continuing the 50+ years of research that has taken place at this site. If you go you the visitor's center, please note You will NOT see turtles. The gift shop is great, and purchases go to help the local STC site.

Sea Turtle Conservancy does wonderful work at the John Phipps research station. The visitor center has a short informative film about sea turtles, then a helpful staff or volunteer gives a guided tour of the education information available. The few staff members and volunteer researchers do wonderful work surveying this important stretch of nesting beach. They are not involved with any nesting tours, they are a research facility that is dedicated to Sea Turtle research continuing the work of Dr Archie Carr started in the 1950's.They do it in oppressive heat, often dangerous shoreline surf and with many hungry bugs awaiting them. All for their love of and dedication to sea turtles. The small ($2) entry fee and the money from the purchases of the small gift shop all go to helping the turtles and helping to continue the valuable research done here.
