The property is beautiful and right on the beach. Dorm room beds are big and have a curtain, showers have hot water. I was there for free pasta night, and that was nice. The staff, however, were not very friendly or personable. They didn't have towels available for three days. And lost my t-shirt in the wash. This place is also a kilometer away from town and didn't have any atmosphere. I was there on the off season though so that may change if you're there in certain months. Good spot for if you want to be on the beach and surf. Otherwise there are probably friendlier spots you can stay at.
Beautiful amazing experience I recommend to any traveler or local. They have the greatest staff of friendly people ready to help and give you the recommendations you need
A really chilled out spot right on the beach. Funky bar with lots of local craft beers and interesting furniture built from reclaimed materials. Property also has a hostel attached so you can stick around for a few days.
I had a blast for a week in Plays 506 in January 2018. It is on the beach, great management and friendly employees. Prices are very reasonable.
We did not stay here but only had dinner. Great food, semi-vegatarian. No meat but fish items on menu. Extensive selection of craft beers. Informal and laid back. Quick and correct service.
Place is beautiful, has hammocks and is right in front of the beach. Servie, like many other parts costa rica is mediocre.
The view and atmosphere are great. The food is blah and over priced. Best for a few drinks on a beach day.
Nice hostel outside the city directly at the beach. Perfect if you want to enjoy the beach or surf, but also only a couple of minutes (by taxi 3-4USD) away from the city Puerto viejo.
Beautiful beachside hostel! Water was only available from 7-10am and 7-9pm as they were having some issues, but it actually did not affect the experience too much.
My home away from home. Was going to stay there just a few nights, ended up staying 8. The hostel is in beautiful Playa Cocles, 10min from busy Puerto Viejo, on the best beach of the whole Caribbean coast of Costa Rica, where you can surf too (short board). Hostel is ON THE BEACH! Staff is super friendly, there's always something going on: open mic/live music on Thursday, dj night on wed, movie night on Sunday, and more! Great cooking facilities. Owner Francesco is muy buena gente.
We sat at the beach bar during our last day in Puerto Viejo, enjoying the ocean breeze in the comfortable hammocks. The hammocks are a nicer fabric than the ones at NOA Beach bar. We didn't eat the food but the drinks we had were good.
I love this place. This should be a place to stay, eat and drink while in Puerto Viejo!!!!
As a bar/restaurant with access to the beach- this place is great. As a hostel, it was awful. They advertise that they have breakfast until 10am every morning, but in reality after about 8am, it's just bread. The rooms are cramped and there is only two miniscule fans for 8 people, but its expensive. It was $20 USD each a night- we got a private room with a private bathroom and balcony for the $40 USD at à way nicer hostel down the street. Their bike rentals are also double the price of anywhere else. Do a bit of research and avoid this place- you see all the great reviews because in exchange for a good review of their hostel you get a free drink. Its not worth the drink to help others avoid this weird place. They also don't seem to want people to stay which is rather odd- way better places down the road with better vibes and lower prices! Also, their wifi is very spotty and the power goes out often.
Lovely hostel, it is outside of town but thats why it was so nice, can walk on to the beach and into the sea in 20 seconds flat. Now common areas to relax in and a good feel to the bar
Nice place in Puerto Viejo (one of the best in my opinion) ! The staff is very very nice and always here to help or have fun. Enjoy different music lives at the bar or the view of the beach. If you want to sleep in your own tent, this place is one of the less expansive and the breakfast is free
Stopped in for dinner. Walked up to bar with 3 staff members none greeting us. Waited a few minutes and when I asked where we could sit that we would actually get some service I was mocked for my attitude. (I do have attitude, worked restaurants for 10 years and own several businesses ----- it's called having standards). When I asked for management the bartender insisted he was the owner. A rather silly conversation followed about 'they don't have clients, they have people'. Long story short, this 'person' was unimpressed and left. There are so many wonderful places to eat in puerto viejo and the surrounding areas owned by very thoughtful individuals that easily welcome constructive criticism without mocking their clients. I recommend supporting their endeavors instead of this establishment. Other wonderful options where I have eaten over the 8 years I've lived in Costa Rica are: Chile Rojo, Flip Flop, Stashu's, Pita Bonita, Johanna's, Bread and Chocolate and Maxi's. As a tour operator and hotel operator based in San Jose I will also not send my clients here for food or lodging. Selina is a much better, on the beach hostel in the same price range.
Dropped in for sandwiches / drinks for lunch. Attentive staff. Good food. Great view.
