We stayed 6 nights in early March. Yes it's a little funky and a tidge rustic. That said, it's a fantastic value for the price per night. Your own separate cabin with a kitchen, patio and hammock-nice! It is a fairly short walk to town and the beach, and what's really great is the quiet location at the end of a dead end street. Chill and peaceful for us middle-aged and mellow types. Harry was very responsive to communication and was around if we needed anything. He gave us great tips for things to do, and where to eat. Would recommend. I can totally see renting all the cabinas with friends and having a fantastic group vacation. And yes the deep pool was divine in the heat of the day.
We stayed at Harry's this past weekend and had a wonderful time! Blue Cabina was wonderfully comfortable, loved the pool and the atmosphere, Couldn't think of a better vibe while staying in Tamarindo - thanks Harry!
My first trip to Tamarindo and and Harrys place was the perfect spot to rest, surf, and explore the area. I was only going to stay for 12 days, but I was having such a great time at Harrys that I ended up staying a month. Harrys has a full assortment of surfboards to use for any skill level and preference. There are many bikes to use which makes getting around the small yet booming fishing town very fun and efficient.
There is a great swimming pool with crystal clear water to cool off with or great to just jump into after a day of surfing. There are only 3 cabinas to choose from which keeps the place quiet and and cozy allowing you to get to know the other guests if you choose to do so. Harrys place is thick tropical jungle growth which adds to the hideaway feeling, and also hosts many of the jungles local wildlife. It was not unusual to see monkeys, geckos, giant iguanas, tarantulas, scorpions, deer, parrots, and maybe even a cow or bull. The rooms are spacious yet cozy with all the modern comforts,(a/c, fridge, stove, coffee maker, microwave, bluetooth speaker system, and a full array of movies and music that you can download onto your phone or pc.All in all great place with great people and will definitely be back.
Harry's is a great place for surfers traveling on a budget, who aren't into the hostel scene. Rooms are spacious, and have a small kitchen. Overall cleanliness, especially in the bathroom, is not up to most hotel standards. The pool is nice, and a welcome relief from the heat of Tamarindo. It has a very chill/laid-back jungle vibe. Many surfboards and beach cruiser bikes are available for free use. Howler monkeys can be seen and heard in the trees, as well as other animals and creatures.
Perfect get away! 5 min to town, great accommodations, clean and Harry is wonderful!! Can't wait to go back!
We stayed at Harry’s El Escondite for the last 2 weeks of April. We found the accommodations to be more than adequate with everything we required. The location is approx. a 5 minute walk from the beach and this was perfect for us as it was quiet in the evenings. Harry was a terrific host and helped us with any questions we had. His knowledge of the local area as well as Costa Rica in general was terrific. Both of us truly enjoyed the laid back casual vibe at Harry’s and were made to feel like we were more than just paying guests. We would definitely recommend Harry’s if you are looking for a peaceful friendly place to call home during your stay in Tamarindo.
Harry provides a true hideaway, just up the hill from busy downtown Tamarindo. We have been two times, and hope to return again some day!
At Harry's, you're just a quick bike ride or walk away from the beach/downtown, but you're in your own private, peaceful atmosphere where you can relax and unwind. We have enjoyed many great meals there as well, since our cabina kitchen was fully-equipped and there's a grill on the roof-top deck.
Harry can tell you anything you need to know about Tamarindo he's a great source of information on the many tours/excursions/activities in the area.
I hope it will not be long until we're back at Harry's!
Great host, lovely spacious clean cabinas, very relaxed can't wait to return
You know that moment….!
If you’re reading this review, you are probably already looking for a place to chill, to cool off, to feel safe and secure as you put your head down at night in a comfy bed, to have coffee in the morning while you let your friends know where you are, to pick a lime off a tree beside your pool while watching a troop of Howler monkeys lounge in the trees above you. You also probably want a place where you can walk to the beach (take a surfboard with you if you want) or into town (ride a bike if you choose) in 10 minutes or less. Maybe you just want to read a book and have a cold drink (remember that lime you picked) while lounging beside the pool or lying in your hammock in front of your cabina. If staying in touch is important, Wi-Fi is strong, reliable, and you have access to an incredible library of music, books and movies off the NAS. All of these things happen at Harry’s. The other thing that happens at Harry’s is Harry. Always smiling. Always ready to answer your questions: where to eat, what beach to visit, who to talk to, how to get the most out of your tech devices, where Happy Hour is on any given day. Harry is always there when you need him and not there when you don’t. Speaking of Don’t. What a treat. Greets you when you first show up; checks on you once in a while to make sure everything is ok (maybe to get a scratch behind the ears), lets Harry know when something is happening on the property; provides 24/7 security. Don’t is there and not there just like Harry. My wife and I spent 2 incredible weeks here. We met incredible people (shout out to Kathy and Alex). We went to amazing places (do go to Playa Conchal). We saw spectacular sunsets every day (sail on the Antares if you get a chance). We spent wonderful time with Harry and Don’t and we consider them our friends! We’ll be back Harry. Each and every day here, we had a moment. You know that moment….! We’ve all had them. We look around us, we smile, we breathe deeply, we count our blessings, and some of us say to the universe “hey Ma, look at me now!”
Harry’s El Escondite may not be a 5-Star Luxury Resort but it’s big on 5-Star service including “Don’t”, Harry’s awesome "man's best friend" (the best trained dog I’ve ever met!), who is always there to greet you and ensure you arrived home to the property when you go out, especially during the evening. Harry is accessible to help with whatever you need, or have any questions about anything…seriously, anything. The accommodations can be described as a little rustic. We stayed in the Green Cabina which is the smallest of the 3 cabins, but it was very comfortable and most doable. The Blue Cabina and the Orange Cabina were bigger, but we loved how dark and quiet the Green Cabina was at night. (I'm sure the other two cabins were the same.) The bed was excellently comfortable (best sleeps I had in forever), the AC was the perfect temperature, the bathroom was most adequate. I can be a “little (very) picky” about accommodations, but I soon learned the rustic atmosphere is what contributed to the most laid-back vacation of my life, and I’ve been extremely fortunate to experience many very comfortable and laid-back holidays. The shower was a little tricky to maintain a decent temperature, but it did the trick and I chalked it up to the “rusticness” of Costa Rica. The pool was the perfect size for cooling off after a few hours walking Playa Tamarindo or Playa Langosta or Playa Grande, where there was always a nice breeze. It’s only about a 12-minute walk to the beach from Harry’s. I’ve been used to being right on the water for most all of my vacations, but I have to admit that I didn’t miss being on the water because Harry’s was a welcome quiet reprieve after being on the water or at the beach. Harry’s has bicycles and surfboards should you like to take advantage of using them. It was a blessing to have access to wi-fi, and also to movies and e-books that Harry provides. Harry is a wizard at anything internet-related, which came in handy for us. Upon arriving in Tamarindo, it was windy and the dustiness really caught us off guard. Harry’s El Escondite didn’t experience the wind and dust, and after a couple of days the wind subsided and we fell in love with Tamarindo and of course, Harry’s. I cried as I was leaving, so you know how much we enjoyed ourselves, and did not want to leave. We have every intention of going back. We definitely miss Harry, Don’t and Tamarindo. You probably have figured out that we highly recommend Harry’s!

We only spent 3 days at Harry's, and regretted every day that we spent in Costa Rica at places OTHER than Harry's.
We are already anticipating our next visit to Tamarindo, and Harry's is the only place for us!
Keywords for Harry's: Clean. Simple. Quiet. Fun. Easy. Pura Vida.

See you next time Harry! give Don't (the name of Harry's dog) a scratch behind the ears for us!
I stayed at Harry’s el Escondite for seven nights, and it was exactly what I was looking for out of a condo. The price was right, and it offered all the amenities I needed. I would wake up in the mornings, grab a bike and board, and ride 5 minutes to the beach. Would come back after a few hours of surf – give “Don’t” (Harry’s chill dog) a high five, take an outdoor shower, and hop in the pool for a bit. Most days I walked down to the beach for the rest of the day or just hung out on the top deck to take in the rays. The stores/restaurants/shops are a 5 minute walk from Harry’s, and with that, you don’t get the noise/foot traffic that you would if you stayed directly in town. I am a firm believer in renting a condo over a hotel room for my trips – I would highly recommend Harry’s to anyone (traveling solo, couples, and/or families – there are 4 condos for rent). Thanks a lot for your hospitality, Harry. And thanks for all of the insightful knowledge on skis, surfing, and Tamarindo! It will all come in handy…
