You can go in on your own and with some patience, good daylight, and looking at the tree tops; you'll see sloths. Also lots of birds, lizards every other 30 ft., hermit crabs everywhere. There are guided tours for $35 or so, I found them quite pricey.

A small but very pretty park - no entrance fee - with beautiful beaches where you can spend the day snorkeling and bathing in an all natural environment (no facilities like toilets or restaurants available).

The parking has an attendant from 8 to 5. You find it at the very end of the road before the Footbridge. There are two Trails. One turns off to the right after the set of houses that you walk by on the shore line trail as you proceed up the shoreline. The other Trail continues more or less along the shoreline until you reach the Manzanilla point "Miss May". You do have to cross at least one Ridge before you reach the point on the shore line trail. Together they form a loop. The coral reef travels from the point out away from the shore line heading back to the river. The best swimming is before the river/Footbridge because there is space between the shore and the coral.

Beautiful reserve that we saw TONS of animals at. Beautiful beaches too! Even saw a crocodile in the river at the entrance.

Stunning park. Amazing beaches mainly with local visitors so not touristy at all. No entrance fee. Lovely views and nature. We saw the biggest ant hill colony ever and a sloth. The paths are not well marked and we got a little lost - but was a great adventure. We might recommend going with a guide here.

Beautiful beaches and scenery, but I do NOT recommend this park. My husband and I (and our baby) were robbed here today on the main trail by a man wearing a mask and wielding a large (around 5 ft) machete. He forced us to the ground, demanded we not look at him, and took our iPhone, cash (luckily we did not have much), and my rain jacket. He instructed us to continue walking on the trail deeper into the jungle, not allowing us to travel back on the path toward Manzanillo. After he let us go, we got lost trying to find our way back a different route and ended up in a clearing with a small wooden house, which we later learned is likely linked to the perpetrator. If you encounter this house, DO NOT APPROACH IT. We finally found a path back to town and let the police know. They did a search, but did not find anyone. We later went to the police station and gave a full report (this is the only way it would really go on record).
We want everyone to know that this is not an isolated incident, but a reoccurring pattern in this park -- although we were not harmed, we easily could have been. We cannot understand how the authorities continue to allow people to use the park without any warning whatsoever of this dangerous pattern of armed robbery.
If you have had a similar encounter, please let the police know and give a full report at the station -- this is the only way to build evidence for the case.response / report this review -

Beautiful, wild place but the trail gets more difficult to follow as you get deeper in. After the rain today it was muddy and difficult climbing a lot of tree roots and hills. Still a gorgeous place. Lots of locals have picnics and swim in the beginning park of the refuge. It’s probably a good idea to bring the guide both for help with the trails (if you want to go deep in) and in case of robbery (we read about quite a few of these before visiting and didn’t use a guide, but didn’t bring anything of value with us either).

Beatiful National Park, spectacular views and surrounded by nature. It is clean and it's trail are nice. Should definitely visit it and support the locals.

I absolutely adored my entire trip to Costa Rica but the wildlif refuge was by far one of the best experiences that I had while travelling. Everyone is super friendly and spending time at the wildlife refuge made me want to take every animal and care for them.

Dangerous place!!
We (3 people) got robbed while hiking in the park. A masked guy with a machete demanded our backpacks, cash and phones! On the same day 3 young German women have been robbed too (cameras, phones?
There have been even more incidents, check it on the internet.
If you still want to go, turn around at the mirador. It is pretty safe in that area and you can still take some nice pics.response / report this review -

Great place to see wildlife, such as monkeys, sloths, and birds and pristine beaches with hardly a soul around! A truly enjoyable part of my trip!

Wonderful natural park with great wildlife. We saw viper snakes, howler monkeys, tukans and incredible variety of butterflies.
