Beautiful property, great location, great service but I would have loved if there were more reasonably priced food options available as well.

By far my favorite place out of 5 different places that we stayed! First of all the property grounds are just out of this world I can not even put into words how cool of a place Cristal Ballena is! From the fantastic people work at Cristal Ballena, to the great owners, excellent food and drinks, Cristal Ballena is just on another level by itself it's that good! I sent them an email before we got there and asked them to please make arrangements for an all-day excursion down to Corcovado National Park and I can not even put into words how impressed I was with the service! We got there checked in and the next morning at 6 am Cristal Ballena had 2 to go packaged breakfasts for my husband and I all ready to go it was great! We were in the car that had been arranged to pick us up, and we were off for Corcovado with breakfast in hand by 6:15 am. Cristal Ballena booked us with the best tour company ever, and it all just went so smoothly, I was very impressed with everything the staff did for us at Cristal Ballena. Everyone who works there is so lovely and goes out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. Our room had a fantastic view of the ocean, and I love the ceilings in the room ( I know that sounds odd!) We were so lucky to be there at the beginning of December because we got to see the "resident" sloth who lives at Cristal Ballena. They told us that she is only there during "non-summer time months" because apparently, it gets to hot for her, but she was there every day we were there. We did the hiking trail on the property and were so happy we got to see howler monkeys! Oh and tucans and tons of different types of birds are all on the property (wild but you are sure to see on a regular basis!) Oh and check out the gift shop. she buys the masks directly from the people of the Boroco tribe and the masks are just beautiful and quality craftsmanship.

Am surprised reading the review about having dust in room. First off, there is nothing there that can cause dust. The grounds and views were spectacular! They added nice signs identifying each species which was really cool. We enjoyed two different rooms and both were fabulous. The beds were a little hard for my taste but i slept like a baby. The room had air conditioning which is rare and wasnt really needed. Every morning around 3am the howler and capuchin monkeys provided a wonderful concert. A large sloth lives in a tree just off the restaurant patio providing great photo ops. The swimming pool was huge and beautifully maintained. Apparently the place is not marketed well and it is both a shame and a blessing. We had the entire resort to ourselves with around 5 other couples. The food was delicious, especially breakfast plus the staff friendly and helpful. As with most nice resorts in Costa Rica the road into the resort was an adventure itself adding to the fun. I will go back for sure.

Great hotel. Located near Ballena beach. The hotel is surrounded bij a park and beautifull nature, it even has a Rainforrest Trail of 2 km, with lots of wildlife.
There is a big swimmingpool, from which you can see the ocean. The restaurant is situated near the pool and both have a stunning view. Birds are numerous, tucans, hawks, vultures, parakeets etc.
Drinks and food are expensive, but it's worth the money!response / report this review -

My wife and I have just spent 3 days here. Professionally run hotel by Austrian family who live on premises and are often seen keeping an eye on things.
Excellent local staff couldn't be more helpful. Food in the lovely poolside restaurant was very good - lots of fish dishes, pasta, salads etc. Idyllic location with fabulous sea view on mountainside and beautifully kept tropical gardens surrounded by rainforests.
The photos on trip advisor all give the impression this is a much bigger hotel than it actually is.
Good day trips organised by hotel. Whale watching and dolphin watching, kayaking etc. In a lovely national park with fabulous beaches.
My only suggestion is that they get some softer mattresses which I found too firm.response / report this review -
