I was able to have 7 mercury fillings removed safely for one-fifth of what I was going to have to pay in Texas. The staff at Biodental are excellent. They are professional, knowledgeable about safety and health concerns, and courteous. I highly recommend them. I was able to have a little vacation and get my mouth healthy. The work was done in less than a week, and I stayed another week.
I unfortunately ended up having a bad experience. I made it clear before the first appointment that I need transportation to and from appointments included. I was also told I would pay for the work after each appointment but instead they charged me for all of it at the end. I didn't like this because I brought cash to each appointment so after each appointment I had to walk around with cash. I was pleased Day 1 with the exam. They had me get X-rays done in the same business center by a third party I paid the third party directly and was told I'd be given the disc the X-rays were on after my work was done. In the end American Dental kept the disc I never got it. They also said I didn't need a deep cleaning and I got a regular cleaning that day. Day 2 I had a root canal it went well. The dentist assistant put in a temp filling as the inlay wouldn't be ready until the next day. She did a good job but in the middle of it she had a personal conversation with another worker and I felt it was unprofessional to have me laying there mid work waiting for chit chat. If someone has dental tools in my mouth I want their complete attention. Day 3 I had an 8am appointment was told it be my last one. The Dr. did the filling first the inlay wasn't ready so he asked me to return in an hour I did but it ended up being a much longer wait which would have been fine but the temp filling was removed couldn't eat lunch and I was starving by the end. Also to my suprise he said one more appointment was needed for adjustments and a deep cleaning. The appointment was supposed to be at 9am I was waiting in the lobby before 9 at 10:30 they call the hotel to say the ride is one the way. I wait an hour it never shows. I ended up having to get my own ride. I wasn't seen till 1:15. I was unhappy that they wasted my whole morning and when I expressed this the Dr. blamed it on the driver and then me for not calling. He said providing transportation isn't something they do for anyone and acted as if it had been a big favor. Also he said I was treating him poorly because I conveyed I was uncomfortable. No apology or accepting responsibility for wasting my time. He adjusted the inlay. It feels rough. I was not given a deep cleaning as no medicine was applied and my teeth should have hurt afterwards but didn't. After any cleaning you need to rinse your mouth and rinse was not needed so they lied and only gave a polish. I was charged for a deep cleaning. I asked if even received a deep cleaning and was told yes. I paid for it because they can hold you in Costa Rica for non payment of medical bills. Also I was quoted for a crown but got an inlay. I was charged the price of a crown not an inlay. I had to remind them of the 5% cash discount. I got my own ride back.
I really wish I could recommend them but can't. It started off good. Many of the other clients there were return clients and seemed happy with the care. I'm going to get an opinion from a second dentist to make sure things were done right as I can't return after that experience.
Dr. Vargas is very professional and gentle. The staff is very accommodating and the office is very stunning and clean. I was very impressed with the care of Dr. Vargas provided. He took a lot of time, care and effort to overcome my rather difficult denture case. He was very particular and meticulous about the measurements and repeatedly took them over and over again to ensure my dentures fitted properly. He is a perfectionist.
I have had mixed feelings about the work I had done with America Dental / Costa Rican Bio Dental. I do want to say that I felt like I could trust both Doctor Ignacio Vargas Gould and his assistant dentist whose name i have forgotten, which was really important to me because it was scary having all those cavities done. I also found all of the supporting staff to be very kind and helpful, and Viktor to be very knowledgable and professional and accommodating. I would say that I was more or less happy with the work that was done until I went to a dentist in Canada. I went to a dentist in Canada to see if one of my fillings wasn't filled properly because the tooth was very sensitive to temperature, it turns out the filling was fine, but I was shown all the rough edges left on every filling, and told that food will accumulate on those rough edges against the gum line and that they need to be filed down. She said the work was not finished properly. I could feel her tool catching on each tooth and saw it in the mirror, and I remember the assistant dentist appeared to have a tool malfunction near the end of our surgery, and it was a sanding tool by the looks of it, it sprayed water out of the side of it and it landed in my mouth and tasted funny, and the assistant dentist looked surprised, tried the tool again, then put it back down and said we would continue the next day. I asked him if it was because the tool was broken and he said "the tool is not broken", but that was not what I was reading from his body language. The surgery room at Costa Rican Bio Dental was a little bit dusty and unclean, perhaps not used often, and both Doctors answered their cell phones and cell watches during the surgery, touching these items with their hands before resuming surgery which concerned me. In addition to having to pay again to have all these fillings filed down and finished, I have had to have two very sharp sections of filling filed down between two teeth that catch and shred the dental floss every time. I did not notice these were a problem until I returned home because my teeth were too sore to brush or floss for a few days. It is for these two reasons that I would say that I had a poor experience at this clinic. I was willing to overlook the fact that the Doctors were half an hour late on two days, and then said they had overbooked themselves and had to reschedule me for the next day, even though I had spoke with Viktor the human resources man about being able to complete the surgery in as short a time as possible so I could have time to see Costa Rica before returning home, the surgery ended up taking 4 days instead of 2, and I had only 1 free day to travel around. The other thing that was troubling was that I was never given a proper quote for the work done the entire time I was there. The first quote I received had two extra fillings and an extraction on it, simply because the wisdom tooth was not level with the other teeth. I believe that dentistry should be done with the intention of minimizing pain; if the patient has no pain and the teeth are functional and are not falling apart then there is no need for surgery, as the surgery itself is painful and expensive and can lead to problems in the future. So it seemed a needless extraction which I requested to not have done. The invoice I received at the end of the surgery still had the extraction on it, as well as an extra filling, so the receptionist called Doctor Vargas and over the phone they made changes and the final bill had them removed but had an added cleaning, which I had asked if we could not have the cleaning at the beginning because the bill was already double the size of what I had calculated from the price list on the website before coming. In any case, I felt like maybe I was not valued because I was trying to save money, I felt like I was rushed through and bumped around to accommodate more important clients, and it seems as though the work was not completed carefully perhaps for the same reasons.
I found this facility to be very professional sanitary and reasonable in cost
