Authentic Chinese garden. Quite big area with beautiful trees and rocks as well as structures. You can enjoy some shopping and food around.

Very nice garden. The price is 30 RMB, it's 4 euro not expensive at all and worth it. Beautiful architecture, trees, leaves on the ground (when I was here in December). A relaxing place

Very beautiful Chinese type mansion. Belongs to high rank official during Chinese Dynasty. Represent beauty at Dynasty era. Definitely place you should visit in Shanghai,otherwise you will miss a lot :)

Definitely avoid weekends or any public holiday because it will be super crowded and you won't get to enjoy the garden. It's not very big garden but a lot to see. You can easily spend half a day here. The interesting attraction is the dragon on the roof, with big dragon head and body on the long roof. See if you can spot it.

A nice garden with an old temple attached, worth a visit when in Shanghai.
It's incredibly busy though, especially on the weekends. I strongly recommend going on a weekday, preferably during office hours to escape the crowds.

So I have mixed feelings about the garden. I first came during National Holiday, when if I could see the ground for the feet of all the people, it was a rare occasion. So it can get *really* crowded, is what I'm saying.

But when it isn't crowded, it's also really peaceful and enjoyable. All of the stonework and the interplay between the stone, buildings, and ponds is really beautiful. You can see why it was a favorite of artists and philosophers.

One of my favorite parts is the attention to detail. All of the little flourishes shows people really cared about this place. I love the dragon walls, for instance.

There is some information in English, but most of the reason to come is to enjoy a brief respite from the glittering buildings and lights of the modern city. That being said, bring a piece of the modern city with you-your smartphone, so you can take a picture of the map. Otherwise you're gonna feel like you're in a maze.

A big disappointment. A few rooms with traditional furniture. You see one, you see all. The garden comprises of a few ordinary ponds with Koi fishes and linking passageways. No exit sign or directional signs to guide you. With the daily thousands of visitors and collections, I think the place is due for upgrading. However, the shops outside the Yu garden is interesting - it's a food galore.

A beautiful garden in the modern Shanghai. It's not as good as Suzhou gardens. However, the view and contrast with modern Shanghai give you a nice experience.

Good place to walk around with your companion. Many foreigners come here. A bustling market is around with cheap items including sovenuirs. Branded items are also available. The garden closes at 1630 hours.

The Yu Gardens and the neighbouring complex of ancient buildings must be on your to-do-list of things to see in Shanghai.
Unfortunately, they are very popular, so very long queues may prevent you from going inside. However, try to have a look around the markets and buildings. The ancient buildings are particularly fascinating and truly look authentic (even though they probably are not). The bridge near the small pond is a beautiful place to take pictures from.
