Loved the place, stayed there for over a week, 99% No English spoken. nice breakfast and quiet rooms. 2 blocks from subway, good eateries across the street, easy to explore the city. Would stay there again!
What they show you on the photos is just not true any more. Unfortunately, this hotel is a true disaster. Scary place. I have spent a week at this hotel about three years ago and it was rather doubtly a three-star one already. The issues then were dark, small, neglected rooms, poor breakfast and no English speaking personnel. Otherwise it was acceptable. I needed a place to stay in this area this year and was not sure if I should return to the Asset Hotel but after reading some enthusiastic reviews I thougt that maybe I was too demanding or they made some changes in the meantime. I booked a rooms there and that was big mistake.
It is a ruin, something difficult to imagine until you see it. I took some bigger room this time. On the way we saw dirty, damaged walls but it was much worse in the room. Well, the door were also dirty. The carpet was stained, the wardrobe lost the door (!), the walls are difficult to describe. But you can watch the photos. Towels were clean and exchanged every day, there always two fresh bottles od water delivered, cosmetics etc. Again, the room was too dark, even if all the lamps were on. AC was working but in an uncontrolled way, it was always too cold or too hot and the displayed temperature had nothing to do with reality. The beds are comfortable and they were made daily by the maid but I have not seen any vac there through the week I have spent at the Asset Hotel. Imagine. That is impressive. The breakfast was mostly Chinese - styled but I was eating the toast with peanut butter and marmalade. There were also scrambled and cooked eggs there to eat. The breakfast room is steamy and smells weird - the mix of a steam and mold on the walls. I was shocked when I realized how the dishes are washed. It has nothing to do with hygiene. Hotel's stuff does not speak English, they avoid greeting the guests, never say good morning
Wi-Fi is working (if working) with a zero speed. Tv has Chinese menu only. Hotel phone is pit of service
In my opinion the Asset Hotel should be removed from any civilized booking system until it would be completely renovated. There is not such a thing like "good for the price", the dirt is never good at any price.
Judging by the rooms we stayed in this hotel is in need of renovation. The rooms smelled musty and had bad water damage on the walls. However, the staff was helpful and the street the hotel is on has a goodly amount of small restaurants that are cheap and have really good food.
Run down
My favourite place to stay in Shanghai. Great location with easy access to the subway. Clean rooms, helpful service. Breakfast is basic compared to many other Chinese hotels, but I still enjoy it a lot - I always love their scrambled eggs :-P
Value for money. Good Location
