I think this building was designed by the same guy (Eiffel) who did the Eiffel Tower. The original convention center in Denver was a geometrically rich construct by I M Pei. It was forfeited in favor of the present popsicle stick debacle. Another tragic travesty of Denver's growth was the dismantling of another I M Pei piece. It was one of those magical Buckminster Fuller-esque amalgams of triangles into a sphere or what he called a 'vector equilibrium'. It was glamorous and there was an ice skating rink too. When the Adams Mark bought the original Hilton, now the Sheraton, they received permission from the city to put up that travesty of an atrium, that blight of a buttress conjoining the old stately building with the former Foley's, which I think was originally a Denver Dry Goods with an official Post Office in the basement.
It was it is my view that there are magical spots, spots that keep you spots that make you stay spots that attract you from the near environs. Maybe these places have things to see and do. Doesn't matter; you find them you stay there. Some, everyone knows about: Florence, Paris, Jerusalem. There are others lesser known but no less persuasive in drawing and keeping peripatetic wayfarers. There's Oaxaca, Oaxaxa with its black ceramic, its masks of the dead, its colonial zócalo, its gilt church. There's Mitla, which climbing never gets old, and other zonas arqueológicas in the valley whose names I've forgotten. There's San Cristóbal de las Casas in Chiapas with its hidden magic mushroom field and its history and reputation of Zapoteca and Zapatista Disseny and the fog under the mountains early in the morning. There's Guadalajara with its harrowing highway to Puerto Vallarta and it's Mercado Libertád with its herb sellers where you can buy Damiana and spike the tea of someone you want to sleep with. There's Zipolite where I promise none of you have ever been to or heard of where you sleep in hammocks on the beach and the sand burns your feet and you eat fried fish, Huauchinango maybe, speared on a stick, head intact, with a side of fries, and down at the end of the beach chicken mole at the restaurant.
