Great place with history all over it. Beautiful location, next to the lake, opportunities for lovely walks
Excellent hotel, great staff, wonderful hotel manager. A very pleasant stay.
Restaurant manager has attitude though. He does not belong here. September 2017 stay.
must see. beautiful lobby. historic paintings everywhere
VIlla Castagnola is a very nice hotel. Its heritage goes back 120 years, when this neighbourhood of Lugano was still an upscale suburb. The premises have been renovated and while the salons on the ground floor retain an early 20th century feel, the rooms and exterior decor look more 60s renovation.
The hotel has a nice garden with luscious palm trees, but the problem is that Lugano has grown around it, and not necessarily in a pretty way. The view on the lake and Monte San Salvadore is pretty, but the neighbouring buildings are tall and remarkably ugly. So is the infamous casino of Campione on the other shore, an insane slab of concrete which is a crime against scenery.
The other problem with the location is that the coastal road leading to lake Como is right in front of the garden, and can be remarkably noisy, especially when a parade of Harley Davidson bikers invades the town. If you are looking for piece and quiet, you may be disappointed.
We had a suite on the fourth floor. It was very clean and in excellent condition, with a vast living room, two balconies, two bathrooms and a small bedroom. I would criticize two things, especially at this price level: tiny twin beds with a wide separation in the middle, and green moss growing on the awning of the balcony which did not look quite right.
Service was nice, but not faultless. We pulled up to unload our luggage and nobody showed up. We had a package including a bottle of champagne and chocolate strawberries, I had to call the reception to ask for it (the staff did not quite understand at first what i was talking about). These are small hickups, but the kind of hickups you are not supposed to get in a 5* property when you pay north of 1000 CHF a night.
We ate at the 15 points Gault & MIllau Le Relais restaurant on the terrasse. A lovely evening and a nice meal, but not 15 G&M points special. Breakfast was nice, save for a runny omelette which came with mushrooms instead of the prosciutto i had asked for.
Underground parking is available (for 25 CHF) and reasonably sports car friendly.
So overall, a nice location but surrounded by ugly buildings and a noisy road, and a nice hotel which falls short of the perfect experience i most certainly expect at that price level in other 5* properties in Switzerland.
