I am so very excited to post this wonderful news: Last week Mayor Drew Dilkens came to Street Help, not once but twice. He did not arrive with media, so this had NOTHING to do with the upcoming election! Our Mayor wanted to speak to me about recent issues and possible solutions. We talked for about 1/2 hour about the critical shortage of mental health and addiction services. We spoke also about the lack of alternative shelters and critical shelters that have never existed in Windsor, i.e. Family Shelters, Teen Shelters, LGBTQ Shelters and Shelters for couples without children. Mayor Dilkens told me, as he was leaving Street Help that he thought a meeting with Windsor Police, Mental Health Services, Homeless Shelters and Addictions Services was in order. Last night Mayor Dilkens called to ask me if I could attend a meeting at City Hall this morning at 9 am. I asked if my husband Barry could attend also, as he worked in the field for 27 years. Mayor Dilkens said yes. At this morning's meeting, I was impressed to see the Windsor Chief of Police Al Frederick, along with several of the higher ups in his force, representatives from local Mental Health Services, Homeless Shelters and City of Windsor Administrators. It was a very productive meeting where many spoke about Windsor's needs and shortages. I asked that we need an immediate solution, albeit temporary to ensure nobody freezes to death this winter. Mayor Dilkens ended the meeting with an invitation to those who would like to attend another meeting next week where we can work on plans for a short-term, mid-term and long-term goals! Thank you Mayor Dilkens for caring so much! I will keep everyone posted!

We are feeling Blessed at Street Help! Some wonderful people have come in to offer their help. It is no secret that my health has taken a toll on me, and I have prayed for our Lord Jesus Christ to send me the Angels to help carry the load. I am confident we will be announcing our new Administrator soon! This will free me to be out with the people who are reliant on me. This will also free me to continue to be the Voice of the Voiceless. God trained me for my tasks through my own experiences of homelessness. I am the one who can share to those I call my children, "I too was molested as a child. I too was raped and gang raped too many times to count while I was homeless. I too was held hostage and sold as a sex slave. I too was denied help, because people painted me in horrible light. I too ate food from the garbage. I too slept out in the cold of winter. I too made many bad choices, after my spirit and self worth was stripped from me for the "crime of being a homeless child of 15." I am you, I tell my folks, who incidentally are all somebody's child, parent, sister, brother, aunt, uncle, cousin, etc. I love you, I love to tell my people. To all the haters in this world, please stop for a moment. That moment might be all it takes to make a change for the better, a change that could better our community and the lives of so many who need us. On a final note, it is pathetic to read the hate and misinformation spewed by some who are using the homeless in effort to win a seat in the upcoming municipal election. I thank my Lord Jesus Christ for the candidates who have served the homeless at Street Help for years, long before they had political aspirations! I love you folks! Christine Wilson-Furlonger

Thank you Patsy Copus! Chris Holt does need to visit our centre. He would learn his words are falsehoods presented to him by certain of his friends. I would welcome him to drop in at any time. I may be away, as I was when Mayor Drew Dilkens came by, but what does that matter, the experience would educate Mr. Holt. At least he could then apologize for painting a false image for his own political gain!

I just got home from a Vet's Cab ride. A dad with 3 small children, stranded at VIA rail called Street Help at 10:20 pm to tell me all the shelters in Windsor had said they did not qualify for accommodation and they were full. Dad told me VIA rail said they were closing at 12 pm and he had no place to go. I contained my rage as I called Welcome Centre who confirmed the family "did not qualify" and I called the Downtown Mission who said they were "full with two other families that had checked in." I was furious, however Jeff at the Mission relented and said he would accommodate the family overnight "in the television room." I don't know what will happen to this dad and his three babes tomorrow. Will they let them stay or tell them to leave. Why do these shelters not have accommodations for a dad with three small children? This homeless crisis is out of hand. If Jeff at the Mission had not relented we were going to have to house dad and his three babes at our centre, on the floor. Could these multi-millionaire charities not come up with a plan to provide temporary accommodation to families with children in hotel rooms? And since when does "qualification" mean homeless charities turn away children?

Street Help is grateful for the people who are stepping up to help us keep our doors open. I am seeing a near future where I will be able to stay hands on with our folks who need me to protect and serve them, while a team works to keep all the other important administrative tasks done! We want to announce a truce has been reached with El Mayor Restaurant. They have promised they will call us if there are any issues with our people. We have promised them we will do our best to have the situation resolved, and if we are unable we will call the police ourselves. This will not fix everything overnight, however we are going to accomplish more as a team than as opposition forces. I am thankful and most grateful to God that this truce has been reached.

For those who have angst for the homeless with shopping carts, here is the challenge: for each person who donates $226 for a cart, we will pay the tax and shipping. Our immediate needs challenge is $5,650 for 25 carts.
A friend who is a retired Windsor Police officer suggested buying "legal" carts for the homeless. I think the idea is brilliant, while still a very temporary solution.

Get on board, help as many homeless persons as you can by purchasing them their own legal shopping cart!!!
A temporary solution, however it is a LEGAL solution!!!

Had a visit from Windsor Police in the Street Help kitchen a half hour ago. He said I was letting my people keep all their shopping carts in the alley. I told him I did not instruct them to do so. He said if they didn't move their shopping carts Windsor Public Works was going to come and dispose of them. I told him the carts are the only homes the homeless have, and they cannot throw their possessions in the garbage. He said many other negative things, and now a cruiser is parked in front of Street Help, we assume they are waiting for public works. One thing that really irked me was the cop in my kitchen had the audacity to say, "The only reason they are coming here is because you feed them." I asked if the Windsor Police were going to go around the entire city stealing the homeless shopping carts, but of course he didn't answer me. Please share to protect our most vulnerable, enough is enough.

I had the opportunity today to spend the day with some of the best people i have ever met. Not only the amazing men and women who volunteer everyday, but the people who come in. Great company, beautiful smiles everyday. Can't wait for tomorrow!

I have used some of the services street help offers, my family has also donated and made up bags for those in need street help has/is doing a great job and they truly care about the ppl of Windsor! When I was their last, ppl in need were walking in to use some of the services they offer and it wasn't run like a business or a store, everyone was treated so nice and like family and most of the workers knew the ppl coming on first name basis, chatting like they had been buddies for years! So happy their is an outlet for ppl in need in Windsor keep up the great work!!

What a great group of people that volunteer here. My 9 year old son Tyler & I we're blessed tonight, by meeting some very special people, while we volunteered to serve Christmas Dinner. Christine what you have accomplished for our community is truly amazing.❤

The problem with unit 7 is that if your black or brown may be kicked out for being that color dave was a good worker because he had a problem with someone disrespecting him was kicked out. I refused to talk with one of the persons working their to avoid a fighting was banded for a month. Dave is black I am brown.
