Each year, medical students showcase their artistic talents in Tachycardia - a 64-year musical theatre tradition at Western University. They have partnered with Regional HIV AIDS Connection for the past six years, raising more than $120,000 for the agency's Open Closet program.
“As medical students, we are privileged to be a part of something bigger than ourselves. We have forged a strong relationship with RHAC that we are proud to carry on. We believe in their mission to enhance the lives of those living or affected by HIV/AIDS," said Alice Yi, senior producer for Tachycardia 2019.

During his graduate training, Haider Hassan, PhD’18, combined his passion for science with his entrepreneurial spirit. He not only received a major cash award for an ingenious project that rapidly detects the Ebola virus in blood, he also founded a biotechnology company. He says that the secret to his success was the environment at Western University. “It offers great opportunities and supports that can assist in the planning and financing of translational research.”

The goal is to identify E. coli in your food before it ever leaves the processing plant, ensuring that it never makes it to the shelves of your neighbourhood grocery store.
A new rapid testing kit developed by researchers at Western University can produce results in hours rather than current methods which can take days. The kit detects E. coli 0157, the same food-borne bacteria causing the current outbreak in the US and Canada linked to romaine lettuce.

Cases of endocarditis – infection of the heart valves – have risen dramatically in recent years as a result of the opioid crisis. In London, 55 per cent of people with heart valve infections are injection drug users.
In an effort to improve outcomes, researchers at Lawson Health Research Institute and Western University are studying the clinical factors associated with improved survival in this patient population, and showed that both surgery and in-hospital addictions counselling are linked to significantly reduced mortality.

The event also honoured renowned epilepsy researcher Istvan Mody, PhD, recipient of the J. Allyn Taylor International Prize in Medicine.
Earlier in the day, scientists and clinicians came together at the annual Taylor Symposium.

Epilepsy is a complicated neurological disorder with no clear answers. Solving the puzzle requires strong, interdisciplinary research – the kind taking place at Robarts Research Institute in London, Ontario.
“Epilepsy can greatly impact a person’s quality of life. People with uncontrolled epilepsy may lose out on employment opportunities or suffer from social isolation. We need to be aware of these social and economic issues and continue to push research forward," says Michael Poulter, PhD.

Here's a shout out to Paritoshika Dabas, the 3rd year dental student that's been with me from my intake, extractions and denture construction. She has gone above and beyond to ensure this has been a comfortable and informative process. She has put in long hours and stepped up amid some frustrating results to come out on top and have an amazing product ready to be sent to lab. Good luck on your exams Pari and thank you for all the hard work you've put in. The instructors I've met have been very helpful, informative and friendly. Thank you to all for an agreeable experience. I would recommend these services to anyone!

I had a wisdom tooth extracted today at the emergency dental clinic. I was already super nervous for the procedure and being pregnant added to my anxiety. The students were amazing. They took their time made sure I was comfortable and were overall very professional! Im very pleased with the level of service given here! Thanks so much guys! Keep up the good work
