LITE: Learning Interculturalism Through Employment
LITE Program Overview: LITE is a unique program that teaches employment skills and intercultural awareness to Indigenous and Newcomer youth (18-30) in Saskatoon. The goal of the program is to connect Indigenous and Newcomer youth to employment, to each other and the community as a whole through educational workshops and field trips, cultural sharing exercises and special presentations by employers and community agencies.
The project consists of two major parts: group-based employment and intercultural sessions and work placements. Participants spend 8 weeks in the classroom (Monday to Friday: 9:00 am-3:30 pm) with the Employment Coordinator improving their employment skills through workshops and employment training sessions (e.g. resume and cover letter writing, job search techniques, job interview practice). In addition, the Intercultural Education Coordinator facilitates intercultural sessions during this time to teach intercultural awareness topics and life-skills development (e.g. communication skills, teamwork) to participants. Classes are held at the Saskatchewan Intercultural Association office at 601B 1st Avenue North and participants are paid for their time in class.
Once the training portion is completed, the Work Placement Coordinator sets participants up for interviews with potential work placement hosts for a 12 week paid work placement that matches their skills and interests. By this time participants will have learned the skills necessary to be successful in a culturally diverse work place, and understand the benefits of having multiple perspectives when problem-solving, communicating and making decisions. Employers who host work placements also benefit from the LITE Program; during the placement, employers are reimbursed for a portion of the participant’s wages ($8.00 per hour) which allows employers to train an employee at a reduced cost. Each work placement is overseen by the LITE Work Placement Coordinator who works with the participant and the employer to ensure everything goes smoothly. About two-thirds of young adult participants remain with their work placement hosts as employees. For those who don’t, the skills they’ve learned and contacts they’ve made throughout the program make it easier for them to find a job in the future. Who can apply?
To apply, you must be:
Either First Nations, Metis or Inuit (please note that we are status blind), or a Newcomer (Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or persons on whom refugee protection has been conferred) Legally able to work in Canada Between the ages of 18 and 30 Not currently receiving Employment Insurance (EI) Out of school and ready to work In need of assistance to overcome employment barriers and Have little to no prior work experience and low education levels

Saskatchewan Intercultural Association (SIA), in partnership with the Multicultural Council of Saskatchewan and the Broadway Theater are pleased to present the 2019 Reel-to-Real Film Festival in recognition of the United Nations International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21 and 22.
This is a FREE event. There will be two sessions open to High School students, starting at 11:30 to 2:00 p.m. on March 21 and 22nd. A film (with study guide) which will be relevant to the issues of racism and discrimination will be announced at a later date. On March 21st starting at 6:30 p.m. there will be a session open to the general public.
