Went there recently and had a great experience. Ordered the paella and started with a sangria. Then moved on to a really great bottle of wine (don't remember exactly which one). They have a super eclectic Spanish wine list. Will definitely be back!

Used to absolutely love Ox & Angela, food was amazing and restaurant felt chic but still cozy. I've had really great service on multiple occasions. However, since the renovations, I brought my boyfriend there for date night on me. Restaurant was freezing and didn't have that cozy element anymore. Wine list was all in Spanish which was obviously difficult to read. Paid $80 for a bottle of wine (of one the cheapest ones) that sells for $25 in store, and was sad to see they didn't have as good of a cocktail list as before. Food menu was also all in Spanish which was difficult. I ordered a couple things and really liked all of them, but when my boyfriend tried ordering they ended up being out of multiple things. He didn't really love what he ended up getting. Sour dough bread was the best part. Server seemed somewhat disinterested in us majority of the time. Point being, Ox was waaaaay better before renos in almost every aspect.

Not what it used to be..the music is blaring so loud you're head hurts. If the restaurant wants to have an identity outside the usual places on 17th then why aren't they playing Spanish music? We asked the waitress if the paella is spicy and she said 'NO'. We ordered the chicken paella and it was so spicy it was difficult to taste anything else. We love spicy food but it was overpowering. Which makes me wonder if they have been to Spain and had real paella (yes we have visited). Plus we ordered a latte and it was a double shot espresso in a single shot mug. It was so strong that the latte was ruined. The tapas were good but who puts chili oil on scallops? Very bizarre. The restaurant has to realize, for the prices they charge for food, customers are going to be picky. We visit (used to) on every special occasion and never had a bad experience. But unfortunately it will be our last.

First off, let me start by saying my rating does not reflect the quality of the food or the service provided by the server. My rating is based solely on the fact that things were not handled in a friendly, professional manner by management. I had a reservation for my sisters birthday, showed up for said reservation 15 minutes early only to be told by a very rude manager "oh well there's construction in the area, people were late for their reservation, so we gave them your table and now you have to wait" - This was after we had already waited for over half hour, it was only then that he decided to grace us with his presence and share the good news. Other guests had a reservation for 7:30, to which they showed up late and were given our reservation. No sorry, nothing. Said reservation was for 8:15, arrived at 8:00, sat to eat at 9:30.
I'm just thankful the restaurant was nice enough to comp the $8 churros after spending $500. Will not be returning.response / report this review -

We had an amazing experience celebrating our 5th anniversary. The atmosphere was very fun, and we loved the update since the interior was previously renovated. The tables are a little bit cozy, and there aren't really any seats that are more "private", but that's my personal opinion/preference. Overall, very nice.
Our server was fantastic; he was polite, friendly, made GREAT food/drink suggestions, and our glasses were never empty. The food was incredible. We really enjoyed the variety of options and quality of the ingredients! - I think our favourite was the octopus. Hats off to the management, front of house staff, and kitchen! We WILL be back, and will recommend the restaurant to friends.response / report this review -

The waitress was mean when we asked to sit in the corner. She mentioned it is reserved for a special customer for their anniversary. When I told her that it is our 8th year wedding anniversary she just shocked her shoulder like she doesn't care. Then she said well it is reserved. Not a single nice word or saying sorry. The place is noisy and crowded with your table so small and not being able to move in between them. The food is just expensive and nothing special. Just some Spanish name for a food doesn't make it Spanish.

Very noisy and rather crowded. Food is good but not exceptional. Seems a bit expensive for what it is. Ordered the paella and it was burnt in the bottom.

Almost perfect!
The food and service were outstanding but we were a bit disappointed that they didn't have high chairs or booster seats for our little one. I guess they prefer to cater to more mature clientele! Next time we will get a babysitter.response / report this review -

It is pricey yes but well worth it. A thought out menu with delicious food and perfect pairings. Also, going for brunch here is legit like going to Spain. Lovely spot!

This is one of my favorite place to go now. I came here twice to confirm on how awesome it was (brunch and dinner) and both occasions pass with flying colors. I have tried all of the foods in the picture and it was all very tasty. I highly recommend their paella and get churros while you are there, it will be worth it. It is pricey but it is a great way to treat yourself. I will definitely be back for more.probably in a yearlol

This is one of the best tapas places I have ever been to. Everytime I come here, I leave happy. Because it is tapas, you have to order quite a few dishes to leave somewhat full. That can get kinda pricey, but hey. it's not like one would eat here everyday.

This is a challenging review to write. I've been a regular at this place for over four year. I've built relationships with the bar staff and wait staff and recommended colleagues to this restaurant multiple times. I took my partner to this restaurant the first time they visited Calgary. Previous experience would have had this restaurant ranked at four stars or higher. However, based on my time at the restaurant November 2016, I cannot rank Ox and Angela higher than three stars which means - it's just an average recommendation.
VALUE - it's difficult to justify the value of this place after receiving the flank steak (cheapest cut - although currently trending) the size of an average size patty. The classic Spanish potato dish is now served on a plate to illustrate volume which is quite clever. The red sangria - one of my personal favourites - didn't have the raspberry puree as previously envisioned by the restaurant. There appears to be a trend and it's not for better.
I definitely understand the 2016 Alberta economic climate may have had an affect on how things are being done at this restaurant. However - regulars show up to a restaurant for a reason. People become regulars a restaurant for a reason: consistency - value.
To leave this on a positive note - the restaurant is still fill and jammed during peak dinner/rush hours on the weekends. And I think this would be a good place for first timers and people with celiac restrictions. Regulars might be a bit surprised with the changes - however - it could just be me.
