I really love observing people on the beach. Families hanging out. There is a real peacefulness in the Sri Lankan people. And exuberant happiness of the likes that is genuinely difficult to find in many places across the globe. Families here interact with each other a lot more than home, there is more of just having fun. And the guys of my age have not yet lost the joy of childhood. And every person on the street gives us a full radiant smile, sometimes even a bonus head wobble. #happypeople #srilanka #hikkaduwa

Seeing architecture like this makes me angry. Angry that we have given up on creating more of it, creating something worth coming to, looking at, marveling at. We have so much fucking beige architecture in Calgary that I'm starting to think property developers have never traveled. Does it cost more upfront? Yes! But it's value only increases with age. Having a city that nobody cares about is much more expensive than anything like this ever could be. Yesterday I got to go on my first Safari with @thenotablenarwhal and @ryanviami. The herds of elephants were massive, we got to see like 50 at a time eating grasses and doing their elephant things. The Ride was exceedingly rough but the vistas made up for it. It was beautiful to see so many baby elephants just frolicking among the herd. #srilanka #elephants #minneriya @ Minneriya National Park

Why are we so risk averse in Canada‽‽ Tis my friend @thenotablenarwhal hanging out of the train from Ella to Kandy. Hanging out allows us to see and feel the environment we're in. So much of our fun at home is banned by countless safely rules that make us mindless sheep with taking responsibility for our actions. #srilanka #train

We hiked the hill to the massive Buddah statue yesterday evening for sunset. A really relaxing lookout with Buddhist chants filling the air around us. This Monk is taking in the colorful view of Kandy. Which was indeed spectacular.
There was so much cringe up there with basic white girls doing basic yoga balancing for the insta while chanting om. Just after complaining loudly about how brutal the 15 minute hill climb was something they'd never repeat. 🙈 Speaking of which, the amount of basics trying to culturally assimilate in their fashion choice is eye roll inducing. #kandy #srilanka #monk #buddah

I'm one week in to my 4 week backpacking trip in Sri Lanka. My travel buddies @thenotablenarwhal and @ryanviami are having objectively too much fun exploring this country. The chaotic color and joy here is addicting. The weather is sublime. And traveling with such experienced travellers makes it all the more interesting. The main view from Adams peak half an hour after sunset, when most tourists have started hiking down. I love shooting long exposure images to capture the trails of light allowing the roads. This is definitely a view you'd be silly to pass on when in this area of Sri Lanka. #srilanka #ella #littleadamspeak

We hiked the short walk up little Adams peak yesterday evening for sunset. I couldn't say that I've ever been atop a mountain with a view more stunning. With hundreds of people sitting like in the photo: Sunday on the Banks of the Marne by Henri Cartier-Bresson. All had their phones, cameras and snacks. But what they also all did, is leave just after the sun set. And that's where the real beauty starts presenting itself. When the city lights of Ella start equaling the brightness of the sky. And the relationship between nature and mankind falls into a happy equilibrium. That is my happy time. This view shows a little @98acresresort.

The best smelling factory I've been in is the Kinellan tea factory just outside of Ella. This lady was in the process of filling the machine that presses the tea, preparing it for the fermentation process. I was shocked to learn that green tea and black tea are the same leaf, one is fermented and roasted, the other is just dried. The leaves in this factory get meticulously sorted and graded into something like 16 different grades and flavors of tea. Using a plethora of really old fashion machines to new computer vision driven machines that sort individual flakes of tea by color.
If you get the chance, do tour a tea factory. You'll probably learn a lot of interesting things about tea.

What an unbelievably spectacular train ride. The 8 hour journey from Colombo to Ella has some of the most grandiose views I've seen. Tea plantations for days, interspersed with villages, huts, lakes and many waterfalls. #mustsee #srilanka #train #ella
