The staff here were very nice and we had a lot of fun while we were there. I would say that they could work a little bit on the appearance in the bar itself because it was a little more like a watering hole than something I was expecting. I don't really know what I was looking for in an Irish pub, but that wasn't it. Other than that, the food and drinks were amazing and the service was friendly.

Good food, great service, reasonably priced, considering downtown location.

The James Joyce is an Irish pub but that's pretty much all it is. To be honest, I felt like I was drinking in a hotel lobby. The staff were nice, but this wasn't my ideal watering hole. It's too bright inside and I felt it was cheaply pretentious. Maybe it's what someone else is looking good for, but not me.

Discovered this place a few years back on a business trip down from Grande Prairie! quiet old style atmosphere, no t.v.s professional kind service. and a cold cold pint! took my wife there this past week since we were in town and the same thing. My new favorite spot in Calgary. thanks!

I would give this place 10 stars if I could. I was in Calgary for a conference and had FOUR wonderful experiences at this establishment. I first came in on a Tuesday evening and ordered just one drink, a Magner's hard cider (this is important later) and sat with a group of almost 20 friends and colleagues from all over the US and Canada. The server was friendly and very attentive. On Wednesday, I stopped in for lunch and enjoyed one of the best sandwiches I've had in recent memory. The All-Day Breakfast sandwich with the added hamburger patty. It was so good, that I went back the next day and got the same thing for lunch. If it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? On Friday, the day before the conference ended another large group of friends and colleagues stopped in around midnight for drinks. Of the dozen or so people in our group, about 5 of us had been there on Tuesday, three days earlier. Our AMAZING server remember all of us AND she even remembered the drinks we ordered several days ago. That's insane. She rattled them off in quick succession, "Magner's for you, right? Vodka tonic for you? Another Vodka soda with lime for you?" I've worked in the live events and hospitality industry for many, many years and it takes a lot to impress me, but our server, Karolina, nailed it! We are a pretty rowdy group and she never missed a beat. She was fun, upbeat, professional and even laughed along with us as we sang the song "Gasolina" to her. I SINCERELY hope that if anyone from the management team is reading this review that you pass along this well-deserved accolade. Even a week after the conference ended, the group of people that were there that night (from Portland, Chicago, New York City, Cleveland, Minneapolis, Austin, San Antonio, Boston and Toronto) were still singing her praises in our social media posts. Without a doubt, one of the best evenings I've had in a very long time and attribute a great deal of that to your wonderful server, Karolina. Thank you!!

Excellent and delicious food. Great staff service. A good variety of On Tap, and a large selection of Whiskey, Whisky, and Scotch.
There is an alfresco (patio) area outside on street level, that is well covered should it be a bright and sunny, or cloudy and rainy day.

    Definitely recommend.

I went to the James Joyce every year for my birthday. It's tradition to get the Guinness Chocolate Brownie. Only this year I went there and the waitress was like, "Well, we don't do anything for birthdays any more." So no free dessert even though I just brought a table full of people who all just ordered food? And to make matters worse she told us the brownie has been discontinued Even though it's still on the menu. The service was pretty bad as well but I expected that since it's been going downhill for the last couple years. It was like the waitress forgot about us after our food was served. I was disappointed all around and will have to find somewhere else to go for my birthday now.

Great spot to grab a pint of Kilkenny and enjoy traditional Irish food. Their bruchetta flavors are off the traditional mark but lead you to a new discovery that bruchetta is not just tomatoes, onions and bread.

A great place to take a lady to play Cribbage, over a few drinks! The server I had there was great and super attentive. Surprisingly they had the best veggie burger I think I've had in over a decade inside of Calgary.
