I have been to Gatewest Coins a few occasions. It is a neat little coin shop on Corydon Avenue in Winnipeg, probably the best coin shop in Winnipeg hands down. They also have a store in Calgary where they are called Albern Coins. I have not been to their Calgary location, but the staff at their Winnipeg location are very knowledgeable and professional. The owner, Ian Laing and his staff are actively involved in the community donating their time to various noble charities, including raising funds for pet shelters.

I am giving them four stars only because most of the coins they offer are mostly Canadian coins.I wish they would also offer more silver and gold bullion coins from other countries (i.e. American Silver Eagle, Mexican Libertad, Austrian Philharmonic, Chinese Panda, Australian Kookabura, Australian Koala, Australian Lunar Series, Australian Gold Nugget/Kangaroo, South African Krugerrand, British sovereigns, Pampa Suisse Gold and Silver bars, Credit Suisse Gold and Silver bars, Johnson Matthey gold and silver bars etc.).

Another recommendation is for Gatewest Coins is to offer more world numismatic and commemorative coins. I love collecting large silver coins like Morgan dollars, Peace dollars, Voyager dollars, old coins like British India, coins from the Russian Empire, Spanish doubloons, historically old Roman Empire coins, coins from countries like Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Ukraine, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Bahrain, Oman, Yemen, coins from colonial Africa, North Korea coins etc.

OK, did I have a borderline rude customer service experience? Yes. Did I leave there in less than 5 minutes (that includes setting me up as a customer) with the coin I wanted at the price I expected? Yes. In the days of non-existent customer service everywhere, it seems like a weird thing to have a "if I could give less than 1 star" hissy fit about. To anyone who wants to avoid hurt feelings, just hang on to your coins or order online and pay $20+ in shipping, I guess. I will definitely be back.

Just a suggestion -- would love to see some international (UK, Australia, etc.) bullion coins?

Update - Owners response does not accurately depict the events or details of what happened. Long story short read the reviews before purchasing from this establishment. There is a lot of truth to what customers are saying. I also have since cancelled my order with them due to inaccurate information.

Unfortunately this business does not have sound business practices. Their eBay shop and the way they conduct business on it is less than professional. I have purchased many coins through them but cannot recommend this company moving forward and will be purchasing from other reliable coin dealer.

Honestly hands down has to be the best coin store around. Its a awesome experience going in there. You get amazing value for your silver and they have awesome buying prices as well. And if your selling it is a awesome experience. It's a full experience and you come out knowing a lot more and wanting to get into coin collecting. Great experiences guys and any chance i have, I'll be a customer for life. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 Star experience.

Busy shop, they go above and beyond to make you happy. Great customer service, would be nice if they had more than one person in the front serving though. Thanks Nikki and Dan for all the great service.

The experience I had with this company was excellent - I collect coins. The price I paid for what I purchased was better than market value and the particular item I purchased

I would avoid this place. They have their prices listed on their website, gold bullion for example, and then when you go to the store on a Saturday when the markets are closed and the prices should be fixed, they charge you 3 dollars an ounce more than the price listed on the website. If you ask them to explain this, they come up with the most ridiculous reason I've ever heard. They literally told me, " Well, the price might go up when the markets open." Can you believe it? I just rolled my eyes and said, "Yeah and it could also go down!! That's no reason!!" If at least they'd told me that it was a problem with the website that they weren't aware of, I might have been more forgiving. What they are doing is deliberate and deceptive. I hope I haven't given them any ideas of using a false "website problem" excuse in the future. Fact of the matter is, there is no reason for this except greed and deception. Go to the dealer on McPhillips. You may pay a little more than at Gatewest, very little more, but at least they don't try to deceive you by pulling you into the store at one price and then selling to you at another. I'd rather reward the honest businesses with my patronage. Shame on you Gatewest. My shadow shall never darken your threshold again.

Great for people who collect coins. I will be buying my silver here as well. They sell end buy precious metals. They have everything for people who collect currency of all kinds but mostly Canadian currency. Don't waste your time at the Royal Canadian Mint they don't have anything good for collecting except for commemorative coins.

Everyone hear was very friendly and quite informative. Best prices around for gold and silver. It is a smaller shop so yes, you may have to wait a little bit if its busy but I have waited much longer in line at Walmart! Again, best price on bullion and easy and quick to sell coins or scrap metals. I have only been there a couple of times but my experiences have been very good with Gatewest and I recommend them to anyone.

Thought I would try the 'other' place that guaranteed best prices for your scrap gold. The person told me my stuff was garbage and pretty much threw it back at me! So I went to Gatewest Coin, and was met by friendly staff, and received a decent amount for my scrap gold.

Sold them some silver, they treated us fairly, and payed. Much more trustworthy than other places where the weigh metal in the back room. Also got better prices (almost double others) on some rare bills.

I also found the girl working there to be short and rude. The next time I go there, I will keep a "horse-trader oriental bazaar market"-type attitude. That should help.

Had a disappointing experience with staff.
I took one of my double coins for a swap. I was considering spending a bit more to get an upgrade more value or whatever. but the lady working there seemed very short and not very helpful, almost like she was annoyed to be working. After her not being any help with product and availability I basically just took a straight swap for something different from what I had. I owed them aprox $4, I was going pay the difference but she said it's OK. So that part was really cool of them.
However some better customer service and product knowledge would go a long way.
Especially customer service or friendly staff!

My first experience in that store left a bad taste I don't know that I'd go back but I guess in the long run its all about price so we'll see.
