Debate club has proven to be a powerful teaching tool, and all participants have had great benefits for their public-speaking abilities and self confidence. It is undoubtedly a way to promote intelligent discussion, tolerance, and respectful dialogue, all of which are necessary for them as students and members of a community, and for Guatemala.

Our scholars held their annual field trip, with the purpose of getting to know each other and share experiences. They participated in a recreational workshop, in which they learned tools and a variety of activities to replicate in their communities and schools. It was a very enjoyable activity, visiting the museum of San Jerónimo in the department of Baja Verapaz.

Last week, our Antigua debate club final was held. The finalists debated on two topics: prohibiting the use of plastic bags and reggaeton music's influence on young people's lives. The teams were extremely prepared and had strong arguments, but the winners of the final were Jose Luis Hernandez and Kevin Curruchiche. Congratulations!

Debate club is a powerful tool that provides skills for critical thinking, effective investigation, construction of arguments, intelligent questions, and a possibility to explore perspectives and points of view, which makes us more tolerant, respectful, interested in learning, and better listeners. A great semi-final today! Thanks to the judges for their support!

We had our annual kick-off celebrations in Cobán and Primavera del Ixcán. In Cobán, we held a Mayan ceremony to welcome the new year, as well as team-building activities and a zumba class. In Primavera del Ixcán, we played ice-breakers, made s'mores, and heard music from two talented scholars. The activities were enjoyed by all. A huge thank you to everyone who participated in the events! We are so excited for what 2018 has in store for all of our youth!

This year we had 23 high school graduates! After participating in our program, they now have the necessary tools to go on and become the future change-makers in Guatemala!

Our scholars have finished the school year and celebrated by visiting Valle Dorado, an Aquatic Park in the department of Zacapa. This was an opportunity for scholars to travel to a new place and relax after working so hard all year!

2017 Antigua Debate club winners Sara Noemi Saz Socorec and Delmi Grasiela Pérez RodrÃguez received their laptops! A little more about our 2017 winners. Sara is graduating from high school this year with a degree in nutrition. Delmi is also finishing high school this year with a degree in accounting. Both are from San Mateo Milpas Altas, a community located 15 minutes outside of Antigua. We are proud of Sara and Delmi for their achievements!

This year we initiated Debate club in Alta Verapaz. To close the club, we held a debate final. The final teams had to debate on two controversial topics. Our judges had a tough decision to make as both teams presented their arguements well. Monica Yamiletz Cal Higüeros and Leobardo Estuardo Cal Cal were announced as the winners! Their prizes included a new backpack and pair of shoes. Congratulations to our winners, finalists, and participants of Debate club! Thank you to everyone who helped make this new club a success!

Our scholars in Alta Verapaz have been busy with extracurricular activities. Computer club ended and our scholars received certificates for completing the course. The objective was for youth to learn basic computer skills. We are so proud of how much our youth have grown already!

Parents in Primavera del Ixcán received a workshop called "Creating relationships of trust" which focused on describing what is self-esteem, what factors influence the self-esteem of adolescents, and how they can help increase their child's self-esteem. Parents were very intersted in the topic and asked we continue to provide workshops which help in their child's development so they can better support them.

The Debate Club in Antigua held the final last week. The final teams debated on two topics: peaceful protesting and working from home. The presenters defended their arguments well and our judges had a tough decision to make. The winners of the night were Sara Noemi Saz Socorec and Delmi Grasiela Pérez RodrÃguez! They each won a new laptop and will have their names engraved on Shelley's Cup. We are extremely impressed by the growth of each participant in Debate Club. A big thank you to Manuela and all the co-facilitators who gave their time to make this club a success.

We had our annual kick-off in Cobán and Primavera, Guatemala. Our scholars and their families were invited to spend the morning participating in fun team-building activities and a beautiful Maya ceremony. We also announced the initation of Debate Club in Cobán, which will get started in April. We are all very excited for 2017!
