ASL COMMUNITY OF NIAGARA & DEAF CULTURE CENTRE present a special engagement of MARTHA'S VINEYARD: AN EPIC IN AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGE featuring SAM SUPALLA!

Master of Ceremonies: Dr. Andrew Byrne

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Sam Supalla's Martha's Vineyard epic centers on the clash of ideologies among deaf people who sign and points to new and promising directions for the future. Dr. Supalla's renowned style of signing captures the idyllic setting of Martha's Vineyard as as island off Massachusetts and the bustling and emerging power of the United States on the mainland. The epic begins in the fateful year of 1817 and ends in 1880. A deaf boy, the protagonist of the story grew up on the island where everybody signs and then confronts the cold and restrictive society on the mainland that does not sign. Growing into manhood and eventful retirement back on the island, the protagonist struggles with the divisions among the deaf community and how to achieve the best quality of life. Miracles of revelation and the rise of American Sign Language shaped the character that sets a platform for dialogue for the 21st century.

Soulpepper is pleased to bring you:

THE ROYALE It is inspired by the true story of World Heavyweight Champion Jack Johnson – who in the early 1900s became the most famous Black man on Earth. From playwright Marco Ramirez (Orange is the New Black), THE ROYALE is a fast-paced story told in a boxing ring over six rounds, that shows the human cost of making history.

ASL interpreted performances are on Oct. 27 (1:30 PM) and Nov. 1 (7:30 PM)

$20 tickets are available for Deaf community members and your invited guests.
